Green wire /red stripe. Cut that sucker!

On another thread I was reading about how to stop your buzzer/bell from ringing when you had your truck key on AC and listening to the radio with the door open. There is a little "green wire" with a "red stripe" on it under your dash leading to the ignition. I wasn't able to get to mine under the dash so I just opened that little fuse box door on the left side of my steering wheel and there it was....a little "green wire" with a "red stripe" on the wireing harness connected to the fuse box so I cut it about 2" back from the box in case I want to splice it back for some reason.....No more irritating bell! The bell still works when you have in the start possition or if you don't fasten your seat belt but now I can work on cleaning the inside of my truck with the doors open and listen to the radio without the bell.
This mod DOES NOT effect anything else , It's for the bell/buzzer only. Mike

I dont' get it?? What year truck is yours. I have an '04 DC and I don't hear a "DING" when my door is open and the key on (AC position). I listen to the radio when I'm filling up with gas. It "DINGS" about 4-5 times at first... then stops. Door's open, filling with gas, and listen to some music!!! No "DINGS" for me.

Well... now that I think about it maybe mine does "DING" I know I have to crank the key one more time for it to stop "DINNING". Maybe it's the "ON" my key needs to be in to stop the noise. I'll have to check it out and report later. Anyway, point is I don't have to cut any wire!!

If you leave the key on it really runs down the battery but you are right in that it will quit dinging in that possition. , When I clean my truck I sweep it out and then scrub the carpets and head liner , windows and dash and so on. It takes me a while to do it right If you have it in the AC possition it will drive you nuts. It does me anyway. This way I can listen to the radio for an hour or two and not worry about it. Mike

PS I posted this in the cheap tricks also. Wish I could remember where I read about it so I can give credit. If I find out I will do that, Mike

I think the battery can last for a long time. During the October fires here in California 2 years ago, we had no power for 4 days. I hooked up my "POWER INVERTER" and ran our 13" TV for two days. I had the key in the ON position for hours-and-hours-and-hours-and-hours at a time. Never had a problem starting it. It was great. We were the only ones on the block with a TV.

did mine two weeks ago. now i can work on the truck leave the door open and play the kenwood with no ding ding ding.this is when the key is in the acc position. also this will not mess up the dinger that goes off when you leave your lights on and turn the truck off. it still will work. be careful though, not all modles have the same color wire. i know my 96 was green with red stripe but i have read where the newer models were different colors.

My Tacoma is the 01 SR5 Ext. cab and they are the same truck from 01 through 04 and mine was Green with the Red stripe like your 96. Your right that it would be a good idea to check it first.
Just another note here...Also read where you can unplug a blue connector that's under your dash just below the steering colum that has the Green wire with the red stripe and the other wire is just a ground. That would be a good way to go but I couldn't reach mine due to some back problems. Mike

i really dont recommed this mod unless you are sure 10000000% your cutting the right wire. on my 2002 i just cut the green wire with a red stripe and it didnt do anything. i had to strip and put it back together and because it was in the worse place possible it took me an hour to do. also after i thought about it that ring has saved me so many times from locking my keys in my truck. a real headache it turned into for me.

I was with Boost Error on that thread. Don't cut wires.

I hate that chime, so after reading the thread, I pulled the lower dash found the panel. Just to affirm that I was going to do it his way and disable the chime. I found a wire that might have been the one, but I wasn't going to cut it, and there was no way it was going to be pulled off without the connector remaining lodged in the fuseblock while I ended up holding the wire in my hand. Then I read this post and I learn that instead, the red/green wire might be the one that is running into the fuseblock near the kick panel. Another reason NOT to cut wires.

And ocdp2000, there's never a reason to lock your keys in the truck. That's what magnetic key boxes are for. I bet I have to access mine once every six weeks.

I thought about posting a pic here of my fuseblocks and letting you guys help, but maybe I'll just go after the chime.

A good way to check before you go snipping things is to use a 12v test light to check the wire. Unplug the harness on the buzzer thingy ( mine had relay integration writen on it ). This can be done by clipping the clip to a good ground ( check one or more of the fuses to see if it is grounded ) and touching the test end to the the terminals one at a time until the buzzer buzzes. Make sure the key is on though.

This worked on my 96 as I do not have any other models or know anyone with another model I can take apart to test other years there are no gauranees it will work on yours.

The test light should not harm any thing.

Here is a link with some pictures to help on a 96. Pages are still in the works 70+ hour work weeks have slowed it down a little.

What are you checking the wire for? What distinction would be made between that wire and any other with the 12v test lite?
