well i stripped my front diff drain bolt.
must have never been opened, factory tightened them down way toooo much. looks like ill have a shop weld a nut onto the existing stubborn hex bolt. will be a lot easier to do oil changes this way.
damnit.

Gl-4 rated oil works best in the tranny and transfer case (Something like Redline Mt-90 is nice).

GL-5 will eventually wreck the syncros in the tranny. Takes awhile though. You'll notice a little grind shifting into 2nd first.

GL-5 rated oils belong in the diffs only....

But what do I know.

Use the search function. It's been discussed before.

Thats my understanding as well. I put GL-4 (MT-90) in my MT and transfer case on my 40, and GL-5 80w-90 in the diffs.

If you've got a 5 or 6 speed Tacoma, you're better off with MT-90, or similar GL-4 oil in your tranny (and transfer case).

Interesting. I just changed both diffs and the trans/transfercase fluids in mine last weekend with GL-5. I've been using GL-5 in all different types of manual transmissions and transfercases in various Toyota 4x4's for the last 15 years and i've never had a problem. Perhaps I'll have to investigate this further, the 05 is almost paid for and I don't plan on buying another pickup for several years.

Regular generic dinosaur oil. Accel brand I think? I bought like 5 gallons of it last year at advance auto. I've only ponied up the extra dough for synthetic gear lube and transmission fluid for the cars I take to the track. I occasionally open track and drag race the mustang I have currently, and it's got redline in the diff and transmission, but all 4 of my toyota trucks have regular dino oil. I do use Lubro Moly synthetic in the engines of both my tacoma and 4 runner though.

I'll be damned. Maybe that's why my syncro's grenaded.

I admit it is really confusing. You'd think that GL-5 is "better" than GL-4.

The big problem with GL-5 is there are a number of additives they can add to the base stock oils to get them to pass the tests. Some of these are sulfur-based compounds that can eat the bronze metals in the syncros... Some GL-5's don't contain these. So stick with a proven GL-4 and you're set. I also agree that if you're changing the oil every 30k or so and aren't beating the shit out of your truck on a daily basis that regular dino oil is fine. Redline Mt-90 is better of course but also costs a lot more.....

You have over 1000 post and you didn't know that. I didn't either.:D

i love how Fear answers the question, then says search.
Sometimes the search feature leaves a little to be desired.

Thanks for taking the time to post that. I wish I could find Redline MT-90 locally in 5 gallon buckets. I'm getting a 2008 in a few weeks and I'm only going to use the good stuff in it.
