What brands are you guy's using? Found a thread dated a year ago, but anybody have anything newer? Don't know if I want to go with the TomTom 510 or a Garmin. Looking for something decent around the $400 range. Whatcha suggest?

Actually I was more interested in the "portable" units and how they're mounted. I was thinking about blocking the left vent duct in the center of the dash and mount it in front of it. I don't feel safe putting it on the windshield with the thieves 'round here. I don't think I need anything like the ones you guys out west use. There's really not much need for those down here in Georgia...except maybe up in the MONSTER mountains we've got.

If some friends want one too, take a look at the garmin rino's. I have two 530's and love them. They are a gps and radio with a 14 mile range (terrain dependant). The coolest thing is that when two communicate by radio, the location of your buddy pops up on your gps screen. I snowmobile alot and these things have really helped get us unstuck. You can buy a couple from 130 ea on up to 500 ea for the 530. The best deal I found was gpscity.com They also have them at sportsmans warehouse, cabelas, REI.....

I'm rocking out a Garmin GPSMap 60CSx mounted on the windshield with this RAM mount: http://www.ram-mount.com/gps_mounts/ramb166ga/ramb166ga12.htm

Easy to adjust, twist lock securely mounts to the windshield so you can take the whole shebang off and hide it when you leave your truck. The RAM mount is on the spendy side for a windshield mount.

Also have a GA 25MCX external antenna on the roof and the cigarette lighter power adapter:

Don't forget to budget for maps, the base maps are pretty useless.
