are headers and exhaust worth buying for a 2.7l? im looking more for power gain than sound, but obviously i dont want it to sound like shit/ricer lol. which exhaust/header gives the most gain, and is it worth it to get a cat back set up, or just get the muffler? sorry if this has been beaten like a dead horse, but it seemed like each thread i read everyone was more interested in sound than performance gain... and i didnt find any threads about headers.

I have the Downey header and FIPK but OE muffler. I may have gained 5-7hp but have never dynoed it. The 4.88s make the most difference ;)

yeah i went from 31s and 3.58 to 33s and 4.88, HUGE difference. i just want a little more power. arent there headers out there that arent smogable in california? thought i read it on the other board, just wanted to make sure so i dont buy them lol.

kind of off topic, but are they ever going to start making super chargers for 2.7l again?

Alpine makes the only SC for the 2.7. Last I saw, they were in the $2000+ range.

Cali legal headers: Downey and LCE

Gearing is the best "power returning" mod i did, but you've already done that. I recently did a weld in dynomax muffler,

there is my "extensive" review of it. I've heard headers will help out as well but i can't see paying about 100 bucks per h.p. gain for a header.

i don't think it's worth it...i felt my truck pulled a little better off the line with nwor's tri y header but it costs close to 500bucks, i haven't noticed any difference from my flomaster exhaust system..

a header will only do much good if you upgrade the intake and exhaust at the same time. Headers just let the engine breathe better but if you don't let more air in and that same volume out it's a waste of time. It would be nice if we could get rid of the cat but...;)

I have the TRD headers and exhaust. There's a little more "umf" there but not much. By the claims made by TRD I should have gained somewhere around 15+- hp mostly from the headers but who knows. I did it mostly so when I ever get a supercharger I'd be able to get all the crap out being forced in.

It was an expensive upgrade, since I went TRD, but you can definately go cheaper price wise and get the same performance gains I did.

KSTacoma, which dynomax did you go with? The size, inlet/outlet, and length?

as for taking the cat off... ive thought of a few ways to do that lol, its mostly driven offroad, but i still need to smog it so... i dont know ;)

in order to upgrade the air filter, would i have to get rid of the boxed air filter? i really dont want an fipk or whatever, because i dont like how exposed it is. right now i have a k&n filter in place of the stock one... which replacement filter would you recommend, and will it help with the air flow?

what about the deckplate mod, is it worth my time if i decide to get headers and exhaust?

I ordered from summitracing 2.25 in/out part number WLK-17741
I also have a K&N FIPK as well.
Remember, to get air out faster it needs to come in faster. Also intake/exhasut mods when put together make more of a gain than when done solely.

If you have the 2.7 you will probably replace your manifold sooner or later after it cracks. I did mine today, did not notice any major power increase, maybe 4-5 hp. The truck is quiter, bear in mind my manifold was cracked in two.... :welder:

I would say so
I have a 1998 and I just added the LCE ProFlow Exhaust, made by Magnaflow
I paid $349+shipping, you are already in AZ, go pick one up LOL
I also purchased a magnaflow performance CAT and I already had the LCE exhaust header kit a few years back

not if you had the newer style 'mini-header' design like my '00 had ;)

I was wondering about this exhaust. I'm putting a muffler on my truck and putting new piping from the cat-back. I'm thinking about making it 2.25 which is what most of the systems for the 2.7 are anyways.

When putting on the Header, Cat, and Muffler to the truck - what all exactly does this help? I'm wanting some power when needed but I don't want to hurt my gasmileage either. I went from 180-200 to 260-280 from my old truck to my new one now and I love it to death. I want to keep it right around there. I'm only running 31's on the truck with 2.5" lift.

Still a newbie when it comes to my engine. I'm having to learn everything all over again from a 3.0v6 to the 2.7L.

adding the header and higher flowing muffler (forget the CAT, all Tacomas have hi-flow cats) will give you maybe 5 extra hp. Intake mods like a K&N or other higher flowing filter will give you a couple more.
Gas mileage should actually improve a tad.
regearing to 4.30s up from the 3.91s you most likely have will help the most, power wise.
