My exhaust manifold is going downhill quickly... I started looking into prices and i saw the headers for my 2.7L and the manifold are pretty close in price. Is it correct to disconnect the manifold and connect headers in its place?? is that the real way u do it? Also will i pass emissions inspection without the manifold? Also one more thing what kind of extra performance will i gain?

The LCE header is running at around $300 last I looked, so that is substantially more expensive. The header is freer flowing because of the longer radius curves, but I am not sure how much more performance you really get. I'm sure that at the upper RPMs, where peak power is, the power will be slightly improved.

Check your other post. I posted a link to a new manifold that was something like $100 plus shipping. I haven't seen a header for that cheap.

Last I checked, you can get a Downey header for around $200.

Even if you spend $300 on an LCE header, you don't have to worry about it cracking again, like you do if you replace it with an OEM manifold. If the OEM cracked once, it's probably going to do it again over time.

Is the downey header a good header? i want to get something good if im going to spend that kind of money
I have heard bad things about the Downey header.(Do a search on their headers ) I have the LCE and the fit was perfect, less than a hour to install. I bought it not for the power, which I did not notice any aditional to speak of but because of a broken manifold.... :welder:

$262 for the chrome 2.7L header, $336 for the ceramic. Those are the options.

The aftermarket manifolds are stronger than the OE ones, but they could still crack. Headers can also leak around the gasket. It's a trade-off.

I have never really figured out why 'high performance exhaust manifolds' are commonly called headers. Anyone know? They do the same job, just one does a better one...
A header is supposedly designed as a "wave guide", with attention to wave theory parameters such as "characteristic impedance" and the locations of reflections to get an effect called "scavenging" (an antiphase reflected pulse actually sucks gasses out the cylinder). A manifold is just an enclosure for a space that exhaust gasses pass through, without attention to reflections (unless they cause a gross drivability problem I guess). However, I personally suspect (for no particularly good reason) that some header designers don't know wave theory at all.

I see what you are getting at. A header is ideally designed to direct exhaust gases into the most efficient harmonic possible, to smooth and speed their exit from the head and actually draw more exhaust gases out of the chamber. The tube length must be controlled such that entire wavelengths are created within the length?

the only thing with the downey header on my 99, is that i had to add about another ft or so of tubing to get to the cat, welded a stainless tube to it, i got the header from bajaconcepts for 180$ which was a plus, but i really wish it was complete. the technician from downey told me that some of the complements changed in the 99 models, the egr, etc, its weird
