4022.1

I did the prerunner to 4wd conversion.Everything I did was textbook according to the FSM all the way up until checking the fluid level at normal operating temps. Here are my problems: The truck doesn't move, when I shift into 4lo and have the shifter in neutral... it goes in, then I shift into D but the transfer case makes noise and the shifter vibrates like hell. When the shifter is in R,D,2 or L, 4lo grinds waaaaaay more than it should and doesn't even go in. Then I put the t-case shifter in 2hi and it doesn't even move in D or any other gear for that matter. Then when I try to put it in park ... it makes a slow grinding noise then it gets louder and finally stops. All the noise is coming from the rear of the tranny/t-case assembly. WTF??!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Is my transfer case bad? Or is the tranny bad? HELP!

thanks
Duc

It sounds like the transfercase is not in gear. The noise you are talking about sounds like if you missed a gear in a manual, right? along with the vibration? I'd check the linkage on transmission. If you put it in park, and loosen the bolt, it should find it's way to where it wants to be, and then tighten it back up. Also check the shifter for the tcase making sure it is not coming into contact with any sheet metal from the cab. I'm not quite sure as to how the tcase shifter attaches to the tcase, but I'd check that as well.

"The noise you are talking about sounds like if you missed a gear in a manual, right? along with the vibration?" Yeah EXACTLY! I checked the linkage and loosened the bolt, then let it move to the correct position, then tightened it again. No luck. The shifter is clear of anything other than the rubber boot covering it. I also installed the tcase shifter according to the FSM, all symptoms that I have point to a faulty t-case. Or something else that I am not factoring in. Thanks for the input.

It's not too much work to pull the transfer case. I would take it out, then turn the input shaft and see what the two output shafts do for different shifter positions. At least it will either confirm or eliminate the t-case as the problem.

Yeah I was thinking of doing that tonight. But from all the sounds and grinding that is coming from the truck underneath when i mess with all the shift positions, it sounds like it is at the input shaft and in the tcase. If the tcase fails, I will try and use my push-button setup... then if ALL else fails... back to prerunner!

thanks

Coll that you did the conversion!

But did you buy a new case/tranny, or stick a t-case on your stock transmission (you can do that, right)?

From what you said, it sounds like the t-case isn't shifting all of the way. As in the gears touch, but it wont completely lock properly. Another possibility might be that the gears going from the tranny to the case arent meshing properly, maybe? but does your truck drive fon in 2wd?

I believe 4x4 and 4x2 trannys are different and to do the swap both must be changed.

Pulled out the j-shifter t-case... input shaft spun in 2hi 4hi 4lo..... but the output flanges don't move... swapped out transfer cases and now i have the rear output shaft spinning.... just need to shorten the rear driveshaft and do a road test.

Really? Thanks for clearing it up. I figured the 2wd just had a end-cap with an output on the end and you could just pop it off and bolt the t-case on. haha

dlmai-Let us know the results, good luck! So what, the first t-case wasn't working?

I at least know the gear ratios are different but I vaguely remember, from reading posts on the 2wd-to-4wd swap threads that have been posted several times now, that there is a difference between the trannies. I could be completly wrong, however, so do a search on this subject or contact RJ in Socal, who has done the swap, for details.
