I have an 2004 and it was not hard but all the screws are hidden. Im trying to remember I think there is one screw on each side of lower center console, remove the ash tray and there are some more there. Start to pry the trim up and I think it just can off pretty easy.
One note: my truck has the airbag shut off switch on the trim piece that you are taking off...DO NOT UNPLUG the switch it will turn on the airbag warning light on the dash...The dealer charged my $42.00 to reset/clear airbag light...total rip-off but I didnt know not to unplug switch.

Other then that it was easy and once you start to pry that trim piece off you will see its not hard. The radio it self was just held in with a few screws on the factory bracket.

Would it be the same for a 98? I'm trying to do a CB radio install in the ash tray area, but I need to cut a few holes in the area in the rear of where the radio will be to ensure a proper and good fit. In order to get a clean install, I want to cut these holes in the trim piece while it's out/off of the dash. Any ideas/tips/help would be much appreciated!

the tech on CT was pretty helpful for me.

I have a 2001 and i thought it was all pretty straightfoward, except for the one screw that was behind my ashtray ... to even see it to know what people were talking about i had to remove the lower panel ... also i removed the airbag harness, but i did so with the battery ungrounded (i never work on stereos without disc. the battery, that is except the first and last time when i brused my finger against a bare wire  ) and i didn't experience any problems with my airbag light ...
