It's not what I'd call a cake walk. First off, on a Toyota rear you have to take the third member out as opposed to just popping off a rear cover (the third member is also sometimes called a "center chunk". That right there turns some people off to the job. You'll also have to re-shim the gears, which requires some skill. This is a must...gears must be meshing with the right amount of contact area of you'll be taking the whole thing apart again soon...no fun. I'd say get a reputable local guy to do it for you unless money is super tight. Make sure they are experienced though! A guy at work had his rear blow because it was never shimmed at all. :D

Actually , It is not likely that you will need to play with the carrier shims unless you are regearing. In most cases - if you recycle your existing ring & pinion -- it'll be a straight swap.
This was the case when we installed the TRD LSD into my brothers truck a few weeks ago. We did not even have to heat up the ring gear to get it on the TRD diff.
This was also the case when I installed an ARB rear locker into my rig -
- I have talked to others regarding the ARB & TRD LSD installs and have heard the same thing.

- I agree on finding a reputable guy- because its all about experience

Didn't your LSD come with instructions (& the tube of LSD additive)?

Have you ever changed rear axle seals or dropped the 3rd member? Do you
have access to tools to measure preload & backlash?
As far as difficulty of installation- it depends on your level of experience.
I considered the LSD intall in my bros truck pretty straight forward.
We basically had the LSD in the 3rd member within 3 hours. And finished rebolting everyting, refilling, bleeding brakes within another hour or 2.

As far as my recommendations
Buy 2 new carrier bearings (approx $30 each), new rear axle seals, FIPG or RTV.
Also there is no need to remove the drums as directed in the instructions-
You can simply remove the rear axles w/ drums intact.

Installing a LSD...

Anyone have any idea how hard it would be to install a TRD LSD into my 3rd? I just need to know whether I need to take it to a shop or if someone from the board could help me out?
