ok, how important is a front locker, i am putting a locker in the rear (selectible), will probably not do any extreme crawling, just some lake trips and a maybe a trail here or there. i am asking cause i am installing manual hubs and a new diff so the diff is out, now would be the time to put in the locker.

how much will i be looking to spend on a selectible locker???

ANYONE have a used one for any reason???

have a 97 4x4 installing manual hubs...thanks for the opinions!!

try out the rear one first see how u like, i have the trd axle and i dont feel any need for the front as of now until i do a front axle swap, i dunno what mods u have done to ur car, but if ur looking into tires or thought about regearing, go ahead and do the lockers at the same time to save money,

From your description of the type of "wheeling" you tend to do, it sounds like you don't really have a need for a front locker. It also doesn't sound like you really need manual hubs. Is there a particular reason you're switching to manuals?

If you're putting in a new diff anyway, and think you'll be doing more serious offroading in the future, then you may want to seriously consider going ahead and installing a locker. As far as selectables go, I think you're limited to the ARB air locker.

If you're already taking it apart, might as well install a front locker. Then you can have 4 wheel drive instead of 3 wheel drive. Should be able to get a Lockright from PORC or Central 4WD for less than 3 bills. It's part 1611.

Well it does provide more traction. Since you're putting in manual hubs, maybe a Lockrite will do ya. It's a lot less expence than the ARB and since you said you are not going to use it a whole lot the Lockright may be just the ticket.

I asked the the guy owns the offroad shop I go to about the lockright and was told it wasn't good for anything serious and that a locker that is a full carrier like a detroit is best. Just in my opinion if I was going to put lockers in something I would go ahead and get the real deal a sure enough locker. But thats me. I understand that some people aren't crazy about haveing to spend $ 500.00 on a locker and then have there gears set up again. I'd like to hear the goods and bads from the members with the lockrights.

A full carrier type locker would be the best bet. As far as lockrights not being good for anything serious, I dunno about that. Define serious wheeling. I have been running two lockrights for quite awhile and wheel lots of difficult trails.

I have ARBs front and rear. from what you describe of the type of wheeling you want to do I wouldn't waste $ on a front locker. The rear locker and learning how to pick lines will get you in and out of places you wouldn't even try w/o a rear locker.

I wheel with buddies that have just abused the hell out of their Lockrite and I haven't seen one fail yet..I've seen em' run with cut tires, aired down etc..I personally would recommend one myself..I would think someone that would make that statement either has never run one or just happened to have a bad experience with one.Just my .02..

My .02 cents.

The Lock-rite replaces spider and side gears. So you rely on that for your locking instead of a carrier locker. Maybe the guy has a point when he says that a detroit is stronger, but our trucks are smaller and lighter than a lot of the full size american rigs so we might not need the strength that a detroit locker has.

A lot of guys have racked up a lot of miles on the "lunchbox" lockers like the No-Slip and the Lock-Rite. I have rarely heard any complaints or anyone disatisfied.

Take it with the a grain of salt. It's a fun decision to make and I'm sure you'll make the right one.

From what you say your wheeling preference is, I'd say, you don't need a front locker. Lockers are a great asset in many cases, but if you are doing low grade trails as your primary wheeling then a front locker might actually be a liability. When you are off camber in a hill climb on slippery stuff, a front locker is really going to hurt because you are going to completely loose traction up front and slide to the lower side down the hill.
If you are going selectable lockers (ARB is the only selectable I know of for us up front,) and you have the cash, then yeah, put one in the front as well. For what you are talking about as your wheeling preference though, you might actually be better served without a locker at all in the front. I run IFS still and don’t do big rocks, and unless I did a selectable in the front, I’d rather run it open.
Just my opinion,
