My daily driver popped a head gasket the other night, so i am on the hunt for a new daily. I am starting to look into the toyota avalons. The years i can afford average from 1996-2000. Are there any known issues with the avalon that i should look out for? Im curious as to actual mileage, as i see from looking around that they average 21-30mpg. Also an idea on average expected mileage on the cars would be nice to know. I dont want to pick up a lemon so any help would be appreciated.

They are just a Camry, plain and simple. A Camry designed to appeal to the over 55 crowd....

*Look for signs of sludge under oil cap, look for smoke on startup, Oil residue burned to dipstick.

*Strut mounts get loose, chunking/crunching noise over bumps

*power steering leaks

Those are the most common issues.

Fuel mileage will vary on vehicle condition and driving style but expect 25mpg average. If your not going to look the car over well pay someone to check it out. I can check them out also.

i plan on giving any car i look at a good test drive and a thorough look over, but more eyes are always welcome. i am going to look at one in castle rock and one in denver on tuesday. Im also going to bring my code reader with me to see if there have been any recently cleared codes. I did read about the smoke on start up, and will definatley look under the oil cap as well as check for burnt residue on the dip stick.

Those cars are old logic, you will not be able to read any cleared codes. You could see if there are any pending codes, also check monitor status (if your reader has a decoder).

If you drive it back from the Rock bring it by Groove and I can give a quick parking lot look.

I just wanted to add in that I loved my 2001 Camry. Got good mileage, smooth, and never had a problem with it.
