I have a 2001 2.7l with a 5 speed. It just developed this noise over the past few weeks that I'm interested to solve. When I'm in nuetral and let out the clutch, I hear a soft whine, sort of sound. It stops as soon as I push the clutch back in. The clutch still acts fine without any slipping when in gear. Any ideas? Any tests to do? Thanks for your help again!

out of curiousty if you had to name an object or something that would make a similar noise what would it be ... i can't quite hear the noise you're describing in my imagination yet. not saying for sure that i can help you but i'll try my best.

Just a guess. I had the throwout bearing go bad in my 96's trans. When cluth was pushed in, it stopped, when let out it started. It would do it anytime the cluth was engaged, even while driving, once it got bad enough.

I've got a '98 with the 2.7L and a 5-speed. SAME noise, I know exactly what you mean. Happens at the same time too, when the clutch is engaged (pedal out) and either the transmission and/or trasfer case is in neutral. I'm not a "treky" here, but my best friend is, and it sounds like the old school sound effects when a door slides open on one of those sci-fi shows. NO problems with the clutch, tranny or transfer case except the sound  , go figure. I'm used to it by now, hardly even notice it. It's done it since I bought the truck, and I've had 3 different mechanics look it over since then. None of them were worried about it, so i'm not gonna.

It is the throw out bearing for the pressure plate/clutch. You will have to pull the transmission to replace it. Mine has been doing that same soft whine since I bought it used. It had 75k miles on it when I bought it and now has 132k on it. It hasn`t gotten any worse.

Same problem when I bought mine in 2003 w/ 50,000 miles on it. My dad's 98 does it as well. It is the throw out bearing as everyone has mentioned. However, you can get rid of it. I don't know if this is the proper thiong to do or if it is bad, but it has worked for me. I got underneath and sprayed some white lithium grease into the bell housing. There is a rubber grommet where the clutch fork goes into the bell housing on the drivers side underneath. Spray around really good in there and it will go away.

im not sure but seems like if u spray grease in there that it could possibly make its way onto the clutch and a greased clutch = not as much "grip"

FWIW, the trowout bearing on the 5 spd 2.7L models were known for issues. Havn't heard of a whine but rattles and banging are very common. Doesn't hurt anythin just a PITA to listen to. Had MAJOR issues with the dealer and home office on my 2001 over this. bottom line: Toyota isn't all that hot on fixing "noise issues" unless coupled with a mechanical symptom.

My 2001 3.4 was doing the same thing. Very odd to have it go away once I threw Amsoil in the tranny since the bearing doesn't sit in the oil bath, but sure enough, it went away. When I hit lots of water sometimes the noise comes back for a day or so. Who knows? I'm at 50,000 with the noise coming once in a while, so I don't think it's going to effect the longevity.

I've got the same noise. Had since about 50K miles. Have 102K now. No performance decrease.

Looks like a lotta other guys have it too. Nice to know. Misery loves company.

Yes, it's either the throwout bearing or the pilot bearing, but I've said nothing with that statement. That's pretty much all it can be.

Leave it be unless you've got performance problems.

Aftermarket clutch?

Would putting an aftermarket clutch assembly help? I have the same throwout bearing issue in my truck and had toyota fix it by swapping out the tranny and now it is back. They swapped it at @60,000 miles and I have just gone over 82K.
