I want to change my tranny fluid on my 99 V6 5spd 4x4. I've read all the posts about the notchy shifting, and to use Redline MT-90. I looked up dealers in my area on the Redline website and visited almost all of them. None carry MT-90, only Redline motor oils. Is there another brand avalible in Autozone/Advance Auto Parts (or other chain) that will work just as well?
Thanks,
Mark Taylor

I put Mobil 1 in mine and it made it shift nicer when cold. I could definitely feel the difference in shifting. The factory stuff came out like water indicating it was shot. Man changing gear oil is such a shit job...that stuff has a smell that just cuts into your nose.

I used the Coastal Oil Syntehtic stuff seemes to be ok It does feel kinda "Notchy" though but I can live with it. I drive about 1000 miles every week and a half.

How often do y'all change synthetic gear oil? I figured that once I changed to synthetic it would last the life of the vehicle under "normal" driving conditions.

I run the MT-90 fluid in my tranny and change it at the same intervals as recommended by the factory (30k miles). Just because its synthetic doesn't mean it doesn't pick-up dirt, metal and other contaiminates. You can run synthetics longer in the engine since that has a filter that can be changed and the oil is designed to last longer. The tranny doesn't have a filter, so you dont have that benefit.

Actually there's tons of people who NEVER change their transmission or differential fluid for the life of their vehicle (especially on manual transmissions), and the tranny and diffs do not end up being the weak link. I wonder how important changing gear oil really is. I will continue to do it, but ponder its worth.

Thanks for the site. Looks like I will come out cheaper just to order the Redline and have it shipped than get any other brand name locally. I checked on the Moble 1 and it's $15.49 per quart.

$15.49 A QUART?!!?? Is that in PESO'S??? Man, Pep boys, autozone are around $8-10 a quart. Do they supply you with any vaseline, or do they figure since it's synthetic, you are good to go??? I'd ask for a kiss, or a hug for that price. Hell, I'm a sick M'Ffer.... I'll settle for them pulling my hair a bit... ;)

my favorite quote when something is too pricey I always ask "Does that come with the blowjob"?

I replaced the factory 5sp. transmision & transfer case oil w/Mobil synthetic about a month ago. Redline's site gave me tons of dealers nearby but none carried the tranny oil. It's a little better now when it's cold. Still a little notchy 1st. to 2nd. before it warms up, but it seems this is common w/the Tacoma 5sp. It's not like a Miata 5sp.! I never downshift into 1st. untill I'm almost stopped. 2000 Xtracab 2.7L ...BTW- I made the last payment on it today, 2/18/05! Zero mechanical problems in 5 yrs. (It's stock) Paint, interior, seats, etc. have held up well. Well worth the $$

I run the MT-90, and I over filled it (poured some more down the shifter opening). It was somewhat less notchy after a regular fill, and better still after the overfill. But it is still notchy when cold, just barely notchy once warm. Much better than the never changed stock fluid when I bought the truck at 45K miles.

I was running Amsoil for awhile, but it felt like it was too slippery for the synchros to do their thing.

I recently switched to Redline MT90, and it really shifts nice now! You can get Redline from Summit Racing.

Later,
....Mike
