I've been looking at high mileage (=cheap) Toyota trucks, and I want to make sure it's gonna last a few years while I'm in college. I know to stay away from the 3.0L, but what should I look for on a 22RE? What do these things need to stay alive? Aside from asking the owners about maintenance, are there any signs of abuse that's easy to spot, under the hood and elsewhere? Thanks.

I can't imagine a '95.5-'96 Tacoma being any more expensive than a really old, beat pickup.

You might check out this forum, which is devoted to earlier (1984-1995) Toyota trucks and 4runners:

You are on the right track steering clear of trucks with the 3.0, IMO. The 22RE is no powerhouse, but it is one of the most reliable engines ever made. On higher mileage motors probably the most important issue is when the timing chain was last replaced, if it ever was.
