I went to Wally World the other day to buy MOBIL 1 for my truck and I see that they had 2 kinds now. The Original and a new one that said extended life with 15,000 Mile drain interval. Has anyone tried it yet?

just put some in mine the other day but will never go 15,000 between changes. I think it is just the marketing dept trying to advertise the oil a little different, mobil 1 and all synthetics will last longer than dino oil.

I was thinking about getting some, then I wondered if the filter would last that long. I'm not sure what level our oil rests at in the engine, but if it's anywhere near the filter, I could see that beeing a huge PITA if you had to change it half way through the life of the oil.

I saw that too the other night. And I didnt look to close but i didn't see the words synthetic anywhere on the bottle. I think it might by Dino oil?

Chris
It's actually synthetic.

"Mobil 1 Extended Performance
Delivers advanced performance and guaranteed protection of critical engine parts for 15,000 miles. This fully-synthetic formulation is designed for today's longer service intervals. "

That's not an issue at all... I run Amsoil synthetic (rated for 1 year/25,000 miles) and go 1 year (usually about 15,000 miles between changes). They require that you change filters half way (6 months/12,500 miles). The oil all rests in the pan, which is below the oil filter. You only lose a little bit of oil from the filter when you change (same amount that comes out when doing a regular change), so you have to put that much back in afterwards....

Yeah, it was a few buck more for the 5 Quart bottle. I normally leave mine in for 5000 Miles, but I might try it and leave it in for 10,000 and change the filter at 5000 and see how it goes.

Definately digging one up from the grave here but I didn't want to start a new thread and I havent really seen anyone talk about this stuff...

I just did my first oil change after switching over to Mobil 1 extended performance and I'm pretty amazed. First off my engine ran a lot better/smoother after the switch and got better MPG as well. I didnt feel comfortable going 15k without an oil change and was planning on changing it at 10k...but with too much shit going on it ends up getting changed at 15k.

To my amazement...it still looked like oil, nice and golden. After reading around on some oil analysis' done on this stuff after that many miles, I don't think I'll ever run anything else. I'm definately happy with the stuff and would recommend it.

Then I can also sell you a bridge in Manhattan.

But seriously the M1 XP is simply M1 base stocks with some extra packages added and a pretty new bottle.

Good stuff, but if you had a choice between plain 'ol M1 and the XP, save your $$$ and go with the regular. Especially if you're going to be changing it before 10k or so...

I've used both, depending what's on the shelf in the weight I need when I'm ready the change it. I do change my Taco at 5K. It's cheap insurance.
I agree that the oil will probably hold up as long as advertised, viscosity and what not, barring triple temps and severe towing, but if your not a grocery getter, wouldn't this badass oil that lasts forever get just as dirty as any oil after 6-7K miles and then carry said dirt and/or particulates all through the engine? And yes, I know what a filter does, before someone throws me under the bus. I use Mobil 1 myself and swear by it. Y'all ever use that Royal Purple shit? It kicks ass too but you can only get it at Napa.

My truck is far from a grocery-getter...there were lots of hard street miles on that oil, and lots of really hard dirt miles on it. And it held up fine.

But really how would you notice a diff? I doubt there is a power diff from just a variation like that (that apparently resists breakdown more).

Really on oils I think the main thing is just change every 3k and you gold. Thinning is all you really need to worry about.
