I recently purchased a remanufactured CV axle for my 97 reg cab manual hubbed tacoma and it was not sent with a dust cover. The seller said he does not include them because they work loose and are not needed. Will dust contaminate my bearings? How do ya'll feel about this topic?

Anybody have any thoughts on whether the dust cover increases the life of the wheel bearings. Or an explanation of the mechanical part it protects.

i'm not an expert, but i'm fairly sure that a dust cover will prolong any bearing. Dirt and metal don't mix wheel in moving parts. Someone here will chime in with some expert advice, but my gut feeling that if it came with a dust cover from the factory it's there for a reason.

That is my thinking too, although the dust cover is not a very tight seal, so what happens when your buried up in the mud or deep in water? Or does dust have an afinity for bearings? Who knows ;)
