I have a '04 DC 3.4L. Sometimes when I shift from park to reverse or rev. to drive there is a ping or clank like 2 pieces of thin metal hitting each other. It sounds external so at least its not internal. My brother said it is normal , maybe the cat or exhaust hitting the tranny when I shift.?. Has anyone experieced this before?

Mine does this all the time, especially if there's any force on the transmission, like putting it in park on a hill without using the parking brake. Every Tacoma I've owned made the same noise. I just always try to set the parking brake on a hill to hold the truck, then put it in park.

It's in the center carrier bearing area where the 2 piece drive shaft meets. I've had this problem before, sometimes it'll come and then go, other trucks it comes and never leaves. Not enough grease on the splines. Pull it apart, grease the shit out of it, and it's fine!
