I hopped in my truck the other day to go get a burrito when I noticed my truck was making some god awful noises. The truck seemed to drive like the breaks were always applied. After driving about 3 miles I hopped out of the truck to see what the deal was. I felt the passenger rear wheel and it was smoking hot. I pulled it apart today to see what was wrong. I exploded a wheel bearing! Luckly I had a spare drum backing plate and wheel bearing laying around so today I swaped it out.

Wow, not very typical items to have spares laying around

You should see some of our trips. We bring enough spare parts to build a complete Tacoma or two. :D

Ya luckly I had had some mystery drum brake problems about a year ago. Someone was nice enough to send me their left over drums when they upgraded to a different axle. Any way the problems disapeared and I still had the parts. Lucky

sweet carnage

how come NOrcal always busts their crap on the road? I know its from wheeling, but either its wacky timing or we are blessed that it happens on the road heading to a burrito joint or the local store....damn thats good break.....
where do you get just a backing plate?
Good question anthony I dunno why our shiat always busts on the road? Lucky enough though that it did happen close to my house so I could limp home.

I got my my spare drum stuff from Robert Cannon when he went to a 9".
I guess the best way to find one is to find a tacoma or toyota ifs axle housing with drums that someone is getting rid of.

- Yeah my bro & I both have 4wd Tacomas so I too have been collecting parts .... It might be a lttle excessive when you have spares for the spares. lol

I sure hope those aren't SKF bearings. I used to work at their plant in Sweden, and I think they build great bearings. How many miles did you have on the truck when this happened?

The truck has near 140,000 miles with some strenuous off-roading as some of those miles. :D

My truck has been making bad noises for a couple months and my brakes have been acting up, so I decided to replace everything today. When I pulled off the passenger side drum there was gear oil all over the brakes. I figured it was just an axle seal so I went to the Kragen around the corner and those bozos kept showing me parts that weren't even close. I put my shit back together, drove to the dealer, and got the right axle seals and o-rings.

Pulled my shit apart again, and when I pulled out the axle it was obvious that the bearing was fawked! It wasn't nearly as impressive as yours, but the inner ring was broken and the balls were rattling all over the place. The seals looked okay, so not sure how the bearings got toasted.

I pulled apart the other side, and it wasn't nearly as bad, but there is a lot of play, so I'm going to have both bearings replaced.

108000 miles on the odo. Guess these bearings don't last forever. :D
