Just picked up my 98 tacoma. I've been reading what to do with the truck for awhile now and i was going to do the turn signal mod first. However, i was testing the turn signals today and for some reason the top corner lamp blinks with the front bumper lower lamp. I thought just the bumper turn signal was supposed to blink and the corner lamp was supposed to stay on as the parking lights. but the corner lights do not turn on when the light switch is turned to the parking light setting. and my tail lights do not turn on in either setting...only when i step on the brake.
another problem also arose when i was driving in the rain today...in the instrument cluster where it tells you which direction your turn signal is on or when your hazard lights are on...both of these indicators slowly light up when i step on the brake for a time period of longer then 2 seconds. and when this happens i cannot indicate which way i want to turn with my turn signals.

- i'm guessing the previous owner already did the corner lamp mod?
- some how the hot wire from the brake light is touching the power wires to the turn signals?
- no idea about my tail lights not working.
- and is the climate control dials and levers supposed to have some sort of lighting to them? cause i have no idea where anything is as of yet at night as for as the climate control is concerned.

TIA

I had this problem with my '98 also. In MY case, the fuse for the park lights had blown as a result of my trailer wiring harness shorting out. I had the Reese plug and play type.

Seems some wires somewhere inside the black box (part of the trailer wiring harness) had shorted out. When I would push on the brake, it would energize one of my signal lights that would illuminate but not blink.

Hope this helps...

only thing i can suggest is checking all fuses, bulbs, and wire connections as a first step ... as for your climate controls, yes they are supposed to be backlit, coud be the wiring, fuse, or also the bulbs if thats not your problem then i hope someone else on here can help you because i've never had that happen.
