i just got an alignment and they said my rack and pinion is about to go out. Such as there is a lot of play in the driver's side. Anything I can do to re lube, maintain, etc. Cause it looks like its an expensive part and sure enough they quoted me like 680 for just the part and my response was as long as I can steer its not getting replaced. Any help would be appreciated

Where is the play?
If its the bushings they can be replaced fairly easy and cheap. Couple vendors on here have kits to fix that problem.

If its the rod ends they can be replaced also, inner or outer, you dont need to replace the rack if either of these are the problem.

Find out what is loose and you can get more guidance.

More than likely it is just a tie rod end. Particularly as they said one side and not the other (though the other is probably not far behind).

I had a stealership try to tell me my rack and pinion needed to be replaced because of play. They even showed me where it was (he called it a ball joint and at the time I didn`t know there was an inner tie rod inside the boot) I asked the mechanic if it could be replaced and he told me no. I found out later that he lied and that it could be replaced. Cost me $100.00 for the inner TRE vs $650.00 for the rack.

Put the front end up on stands and have a friend move the wheel from side to side and watch for play.

How funny, same thing happened to me about two weeks ago except I double checked the rack and it was leaking and definetely in need of replacement (was not just a tie rod end). I posted in the wanted section here and sure enough, I just got myself another rack that only has 60,000 on it (mine had 140) for the small sum of $120. Put it in yourself and save the labor. Should be up and going in no time. Just be smart about it and you can fix your rig for cheap as I can attest
