I have been hearing a rattling sound coming from what seems to be the exhaust. Sounds like paper clips in an empty aluminum can. It starts the noise at about 2000 rpm's and continues to redline. I was thinking that it may be the cat going bad, not real sure though. Just wanted to see if anyone else has ever encountered this.

don't worry. you're not the only one. mine does it, and it drives me insane. if you are near the truck it sounds like shit. when you crank it up by your friends, they say "dude, your truck sounds bad", and i'm like thanks, and then they are like "no, bad as in shit, not bad as in awesome." wow, that makes me feel so good. lol. I have heard they are pretty expensive, but i haven't priced one yet, i have a friend that works at a muffler shop, and he is gonna try to get me one. i would gut it, but because of the downstream o2 sensor, i am hesitant. anyone have any inpupt on a gutted cat on a taco?? anyways, your cat is prolly shot, also check your heat sheild. i rigged somethin up with a couple bolts and pipe clamps, puttin pressure on the bottom of the cat, that helped, but, i still had the rattle, so heat sheild made some of the noise, but most was from inside the cat. anyone else out their have any input on a gutted cat??? anyways, good luck.

My cat was new in July or Aug and it went about Christmas. Still havent fixed it but I think AutoZone is about $100 for a direct fit. Im thinking on putting on a Flowmaster 40 because the blown out cat is in teh muffler so i dont want to replace the cat if the muffler is blocked. Big exhaust leak where the cat is now so i think the muffler might be a little full of cat...

my exhaust has a rattle as well...but you can only hear it when there's something next to you for the sound to echo off of. only does it under acceleration, and you can't hear it from outside the cab...yetin the cab, it sounds like its comming from outside the cab

that's exactly what mine does man, i have yet to figure it out, but if i beat on the cat w/a rubber mallet i can hear a tiny loose metal sound inside.

I gutted my cat (alytic converter) a couple years ago... the ONLY drawback is that damn check engine light.. as for the rattle, i cured mine with a few "love taps" around the heat shield w/ a hammer - a trick i'd heard about but seemed too easy to work...it did for me.

Mine rattles when i have the brakes on in drive, usually more on warmer days. When I put it into neutral, the sound goes away. It annoys the hell out of me and sounds kinda like someone beating a garbage can. Maybe a bad cat?

What benefits do you get from "gutting" the cat? How do you do it??

you can gut the cat by uninstalling it and breaking/removing all the contents. then reinstall it and you'll get better flow from the decreased restriction (maybe an extra hp or two) and really bright check engine light on your dashboard. not worth it to me.

The rattling your hearing is probably the same thing i was hearing too i got under it and looked..(at an idle the things soo loud and annoying)..there is a brace inbetween the cat and the muffler that has rubber bushings a plate and holds the pipe up..that was the problem..i cut the brace off and not a problem since..hope that can help you some way

Did you ever find out what was causing the rattle?

I have this same rattle coming from the exhaust/cat/underneath the cab area, and it's bugging the heck outta me... =(

You guys should remove both cats, weld up a test pipe with flanges that match your existing piping with a 18" MAGNAFLOW muffler (2.5" in and out) and pick up a URD o2 sensor simulator.
I did that with mine and it sounds and performs real well! If you have to do an emmisions test in the future just throw your old cats back on, it should take about 5 minutes to swap them.
My factory cat died after a couple of years and i had it replaced under warranty. They are very expensive! Go the test pipe route you will be glad you did especially if you have a S/C'r.

Rattling Exhaust Sound Fixed...

I had the same exact symptoms as you. So last weekend I had it checked out at meineke, because I could not for the life of me find out where it was coming from.

It turned out to be a couple of cracks on the muffler where the exhaust pipes connect (on each side).

I rigged my exhaust to hang in a wierd way, since it would hit my leaf pack after I lifted it a few years ago ...so this may have cause the cracks.

In any case...I had them weld in a replacement muffler I paid an extra 15 bucks to have them weld in a few other braces on the muffler and read exhaust pips, and the terrible rattling sound is gone.

I'm glad it wasn't the cat...which is what I originally thought it was...
