OK you guys have heard this before but I am getting ready to regear and I want to be sure to buy the correct size parts. I have a 98 Tacoma, non TRD and a B03A code on the inside of the door which is a 8" 4.10. I could've sworn that I was told the non TRD rears were 8.4" so needless to say I'm confused. Should I just trust the code on the door jamb and order 4.88's for an 8" rear? Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The 8.4 (210mm) rear is the same one in the Tacoma, Tundra, and T-100. If you call a good gear shop, and tell them you have a Tacoma Non-TRD, they will know what you need.

I thought you had some 4.56's already? Or at least had a lead on some.

The rearends are both 8" diameter ring gears, but vary in design.

Ask for the non-TRD or Tundra/T-100 gearset as Ted instructed.

I'm working at home today, and just for grins I went down stairs to take a pic. On the left is the 8.4, on the right is TRD. As you said, they are both 8 inches in dia.

Maybe I just can`t see it but what are the differences in the two?
Bolt pattern or size of the bolts? Just curious.

The TRD has 10 bolts, the 8.4 has 12. I take a pic for you later.
smaller bolts on the TRD too with, what, 52# of torque, instead of 92# on the non-TRD?

is the ID the same? OD? I've always wondered just how different they are ;)

go here for gears/install kits:
http://www.performanceoffroadcenter.com/ ask for Alex and mention ttora for best price anywhere.
He will know what you need...non-TRD or 'without-locker'
get the master install kit(s).

what engine/tranny do you have?
what size tires are you going to or have now?

It's easy- the TRD ring has three red teeth. Now you know. :D
why red and not yellow...or green...or.... :D

all I knew for sure was the bolt difference; thanks for adding another useless piece of triva to my collection :p

98 2.7l 5 speed with 33X12.50X15 BFG MT KM's. I have no power up hills and if there is wind against me going up hills I may as well pull over and wait for the wind to stop. Just a little exaggeration but I need to regear bad. I emailed the guys at PORC but have not heard back yet.
Thanks

I have the same engine/tranny with 33x10.50s. OE was 4.30s and I regeared to 4.56s taking me right back to stock performance (adjusted ratio of 4.28:1) but I still wanted more power, arr arr arr!
regeared to 4.88s when the front ARB went in.
around town and on the trail this is the way to go, hands down. but, if you do a lot of hi-speed hwy driving, like over 70 on a regular basis you gas mileage will suffer. If I keep it around 65-70 I can get just over 20 mpg but faster than that and it drops quickly.

there is a huge difference between the 56s and the 88s that I never expected. In lo range it's almost like having a crawler compared to the 4.56s...stress on the word almost ;) On the road I can cruse in 5th up small inclines again ;)

get the 4.88s; if you ever decide to SAS and go to 35s you won't have to regear ;)

Sweet man, I ordered the 4.88's from Alex at PORC today. I do some highway driving but I prefer backroads. It's good to know I'll be able to climb hills without a lot of down shifting again.
Thanks

well, it's still a 4-banger so downshifting will always be a must but not nearly as bad as before.
But, I have no trouble keeping up with the v6s on runs ;)

Chris- what did you do with your 4.30's or how much did you sell them for?

Well, uh...actually, when I regeared the first time I hadn't even heard of ttora so went by what the Toyota website said as to what OE gears I had. The only ratios that were listed were 3.91 for the manual and 4.10 for the AT. Cute, huh?

So, figuring I had the 3.91s I went to 4Wparts and had them install 4.56s, rear ARB and the tires for more $ than you want to know about. Lack of information is sure expensive. they ask what I want to do with the old gears...'pitch um' says I thinking they were the useless 3.91s...oops.

If they are in good shape they can sell for as much as $100/axle since they are not available aftermarket, only from the dealer for mega bucks.

Damn..that sucks.....
I was asking with the slight hope that you still had them around ;)

Yeah I am the local parts whore...BUt hey when it comes time that someone needs something....one of my spare parts usually comes in handy.

-I am fortunate to have Murderman as as local to assist me in any gear related work.
