Hey all I bought 2 more lights and found a spot under the stock bumper to mount them. I was reading some tech article on relays and could not get it to work for the life of me. I ended up just wiring the switch directly bypassing the relay. Anyone have a wiring guide as far as what prong takes what, for example when looking at it from the front which of the 4 prongs take what. Also would it be bad for the switch to pull all the amp's from the lights without the relay? Thanks

It would help to know what kind of relay you are using - can you post a pic of it?

That depends on the switch, and how many amps you are running through it, but generally speaking, it's not a good idea.

Here is a schematic for the wiring on my ARB locker, in which I show the connections for a common Bosch 40amp relay. It will work the same for your lights...

Basically, the power wire (12v coming from your battery) hooks up to terminal #30, and the wire going from the relay to your lights would hook up to terminal #87. The wire that goes between your switch, and the relay, would connect to terminal #86, and terminal #85 goes to ground. The center terminal (#87a) is not used in this case.

This is what the Bosch relay looks like.

Its just a regular 30 amp 12 volt relay with 4 prongs on the end.

The switch I got from the dealer. Its a fog light switch from a camary. It fits the slots under the ash tray perfectly so I bought it.

Thanks for the help on that. I re-do the wiring and see how it turns out.

Your going to hook up the relay so its not a huge deal but I dont think a stock toyota fog light switch is made to handle much more current than needed to run a relay... They seem pretty light duty.

there are two ways to wire a relay,

way 1 is using the ground as a switch
way 2 is using power as a switch

way 1 would be like this

30 = +12v
87 = lights
85 = switch (which is going to a ground point)
86 = +12v

second way

85 = ground
30 = +12v
86 = switch (which is powered)
87 = light

personally i like the first method becuase you dont have to worry about 12v constant in your dash, but downside is you cant really use a lighted switch.

Cool - yea, that relay should work just fine. Let us know how it goes.
That way easy. Thanks Don't know why it took so long to figure out.
:eek:
