Hey guys. I don't know if this has been covered, but it looks like theres a "J" Shaped elbow comming off of the intake on the bottom. It's just hose clamped on there and it looks like nothing is connected to it.

Looks like it would disrupt the airpflow to me. Anyone try putting a plug there and making it flush with the rest of the intake (A piece of solid oundstock the size of the opening)

I believe that's some kind of bypass valve where debris goes that the air filter didn't catch. If you do a lot of 4 wheelin I suggest you leave that there.

Maybe I'll pull mine and check. If nothings in there, I'll probably put some solid round stock in there.

that j tube does function like a trap. i checked mine and it had a handful of mud rocks in it. if i was you i would DEFINATELY leave it on. the risks out weigh the benefit IMO. i doubt it will help the airflow much anyway.

Nah, you guys are all way off. It's a Helmholtz Resonator. It cancels out sound waves in such a way as to help silence the intake tract. My little 03 Nissan Sentra had 3 of 'em. Popular Mechanics magazine just had an article on the device. It won't hurt anything to take it off...but you have some major problems if you found debris in yours. You must be using a K&N. If there are rocks and/or debris in the trap, no matter how much off-roading you do, you need to check the fit of your air filter and maybe switch back to an OE design filter.

It makes it pretty loud in the cab............and throws off the harmonics

toyota spent millions in rd but if you think you know better ........than remove your egr while your at it.......since "all it does is rob HP"


check the muffler bearings too

The extra noise it makes dosen't mean your getting more power. Like spindleshanks said its a hemholtz resonator, the noise your getting is turbulance in your intake tract not a smooth steady flow. Turbulant air means you are not efficiently filling your cylinders with the fuel/air mixture. This can also cause droplets of fuel instead of atomized fuel. The only time these type of intake mods make more power is at high rpm full throttle, everywhere else (like the majority of your driving) you will actually have less power, but since its louder it must have more power... right? Let the researchers at Toyota do their jobs, they've made some pretty awesome trucks in my opinion.

Did the deck plate mod and removed both air silencers on my 02 taco, could not stand the way it sounded at high rpm, reminded me of when I made fun of civics running down the road that sounded like an amped up blender. I hear a lot of people say it makes it sound more throaty and compare it to a v-8 sound, this depends on your opinion I guess, even though I do not believe that in any way a 3.4l can be compared to an American v-8, but I just thought it sounded like I put a crappy exhaust tip on it or I just had a long fart. So I put the deck plate back in but kept the air silencers off, sounds fine to me now and I actually get about 40 miles per tank more now and the only time I notice any kind of power loss is going up Vail pass, I now go 60 mph instead of 65 mph, big deal. As for getting debris in the J- elbow that I capped off, I remove it every once in awhile to check for water in it, which I have not encountered and have never found " mud rocks"

So if you want your truck to sound horrible for minimal power gain, do the deck plate and remove both silencers, if not then just leave it alone.

I don't mean to argue here but I am more confused. The J-elbow and the "hemholtz resonator" create air turbulence. This is specifically designed because new vehicles need to meet a certain db rating to be sold in America, so by restricting airflow the vehicle runs quieter, there for restricting power, even though minimal, and allowing it to be sold in America. Also the ecu will recognize the increase in air and provide an increase in fuel, thus explaining the worse gas mileage, it will not allow a lean mixture and if it does you will certainly hear and feel the pinging. Your statement of "making a more straight path for air to travel equals more turbulence" to me makes zero sense at all, air such as water will travel the path of least resistance, and removing both air silencers creates the path of least resistance, meaning more air which equals more power and more fuel used. I do not wish to get into the "more air is hot air" debate at this time. Please correct me if I am wrong.

it should not catch anything in there. if it does you have something wrong with your air cleaner.

Its on the intake tube just a bit after the box. It hangs "down" into the engine compartment just above the AC lines

I just took mine off to make routing my PS pump res easier. Mine was perfectly clean and its been on the truck for 11 years.
