I just changed my oil and was told to use 10W40 for off-roading instead of 10W30, is this a problem or is that ok. How do the #'s in the SAE_W_ make a differance? I have a 2004 SR5 4x4 TACO.

Thanks

Our engines are designed for 5W-30 for better fuel economy, 10W-30 is alittle thicker oil at startup which shouldnt hurt but 10W-40 would be over kill unless you buring alot of oil but since you have an 04 i dont think you have that problem. Running what the manufacture says is all you need. If your concerned about heat switch to a fully synthetic like redline, amsoil or moble 1.

What fool told you something like that?

If you are off road racing and spending most of your time at full throttle and high RPMs then you might end up with an elivated oil temp. However, if you off road like most of us at slow speed and in 4 high, you will never get your oil very hot at all. The idea that you need a thicker oil for this is just dumb.

The hottest your oil will get is constant high speed cruising on the highway, like a steady 80+ MPH. Anything less then that, your oil will always be the same temp since it is stabilized by the oil warmer/cooler. It stays pretty much the same temp all the time.

Oh, the numbers do have a meaning. XwX indicates it is a multigrade oil. The number before the w is the cold rating. That is the viscosity at a cold temp, I forgot what it is, the number after the w is the viscosity at operating temp, 100c.

The idea is you want the lowest cold number so you get the best flow and protection during a cold start and warm up, but is the specifide viscosity at operating temp required for your engine. I use 0w30 in all of my vehicles. It gives the best possible flow and protection when the engine is started, and is the required 30 at operating temp to protect the engine.

You can go here:

www.GadgetOnline.com/AMSOIL.htm

and download the Motor Oil Bible. If you read that you will know more about motor oil then 99.9% of the professional mechanics out there and certainly the guy that told you to use 10w40 because you off road.

stick with 5w-30 that toyota recommends for this engine and dont listen to what your buddy who recommended 10w-40 tells you. download the motor oil bible like gadget says and give a copy to your buddy while you are at it.
