Finally warming up here enough to spraypaint my sliders. I want to paint them before i have them welded on to make painting easier.

Any input on what paint to use? Anyone try that "hammer-rite" paint?

I think anything will do. I've used rust oleum flat black with great results; easiest to match for touch up

Should I even bother with primer?

These are Trail Gear sliders.

I used a self etching primer, and then painted with that rocker guard stuff. It has more rubber in it I believe so it doesn't chip away as easy, and I think it looks pretty good. Pretty inexpensive too. We were in a rush and painted them after we welded them on though, which wasn't fun lol.

I am going to paint everything but the mounting plates, then hit those with some sort of bedliner spray after welding, and hit the frame while I'm at it.

I use "Rust Tough" Krylon semi-flat.



I really like how it blends when I do touch up or repainting.
And I used it on not only my sliders and bumpers...
But also on my trailer rebuild.



Over the years... the more coats I apply...
the more durable it becomes...

Tho' it'll never hold up against rock rash.

I never did use a base/primer. Nor does it need that IMO
I believe this is a self-etching type of rust prohibitive paint.

However... the metal does need to be cleaned and dry before application.

I simply removed any scale/rust with a wire brush...
then used brake cleaner to prep and clean...
let dry... and sprayed them.

Now for touch up... I just sand lightly... wipe down with alcohol prep..
and repaint... Been doing that for years... and works good.

* btw... it blends and matches the truck's frame fairly good as well ;)

I like the .98 cent cans of semi-gloss black spray paint from Home Depot for my sliders, axles, frame, etc. I can't justify spending more than that on something I plan to grind off on the rocks anyway. However, rust isn't an issue here, so quality may be more important to you.

I have used the hammer-rite paint on a bumper, and it seemed to hold up well to daily wear and tear and didn't scratch easily. No match for being dragged across a rock though. :D

My vote is for Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer, followed by Rustoleum Satin black. TacoDell's suggestion of cleaning them first is good. I clean mine off with brake cleaner if it's bare metal. Or use some other type of degreaser or alcohol.

Even though the metal is clean and not rusty, I have found that the Rusty Metal Primer from Rustoleum is extremely tough and has excellent adhesion. Still not going to hold up to rock rash but nothing does, but it's really durable otherwise.

I choose the Satin Finish Rustoleum because it is the closest match to most powder coat. I use it to touch up my ARB bumper on my Cruiser and it matches very well.

Krylon and Duplicolor paints lay down far better than Rustoleum because they have a higher quality fan tip vs conical tip.

I initially used the Duplicolor spray on bedliner, but recoated with Krylon Satin Black. Holds up for about a year before sand/rocks chip it up and it needs recoating.

Priming is essential. I may have to try the Rusty Metal primer, since most clean metal primers don't give great adhesion from what I've seen.

Use sulfuric acid to wipe down the metal to etch it. Wash it with water and dry, then go to town on painting.

Did this with my beadlock rings and the adhesion is fantastic.

Off topic question but what hitch are you using on your All Pro bumper? I'd like to install one on mine.

It's a 1st gen (early prod.) Rr. All-Pro bumper...
tuned up... by me. ;)

Look in muh garage to see what I did. :2cents:

* could likely be done to the newer production bumper as well.
Tho' if I had a fresh start...
I'd raise the receiver center/flush in the license frame opening.
even then... this one has never really hung me up or been of issue...
and it's been thru hell and back.
