So I bought this 99 4 runner under the impresonation that it had 160k miles on it. Looks like it might be closer to 240k. How do people role back the miles on their vehicles like this? Doesn't say anything like different motor put in. into the vehicle 5k wondering if I should keep going?

MILEAGE INCONSISTENCY

The mileage reported here conflicts with this vehicle's odometer history. Ask a mechanic or the seller to confirm the actual mileage - this entry may just be a clerical error.

You can't roll back a digital cluster from what I know. But if a digital cluster goes dead, what's to stop someone from putting in a junk yard cluster (that may have a different, lower, mileage count)? Nothing.
Changes to mileage like that should be reported to the state DMV and they adjust records as necessary.

Unfortunately it sounds like you didn't see the vehicle history until after you purchased it. Not that it makes a difference at this point but have you contacted the previous owner? It looks like owner 5 is where it changed.

The way I look at it, mileage means very little.

What matters is what was done (Or Not Done) to the truck.

Think about it...

Would you rather buy a truck that has 200K miles on it that was gently driven and obsessively serviced, or a truck with 50K miles that was hammered by a drunken teenager and still has the break in oil in it?

Sure, having somebody pull a scam on you might raise the price, but the truck is what the truck is.

If the motor and drive train is tight, and the body is in good shape...

Shit, A good truck is a good truck. Get on down the road and be happy.

Sucks if you were scammed but mileage on these trucks is mostly irrelevant if they have been maintained. Being a 99 condition is more important than mileage. Hopefully you bought mostly because of its condition and not its mileage.

I wouldn't say you were scammed, because it happened a few owners before, it looks.

It does suck. Like Scuba said, the instrument panel holds the car milage. So a faulty cluster (or swapped for increased 'value') will inevitably give a incorrect number.

I'd be fucking irate.
I can't stand dishonest piece of shit people. I'd at least contact the son of a bitch just to let him know you're turning his ass in.
Get rid of these scumbags.

I flew from WA to CA to purchase a Tacoma doublecab from a member on here - (Russian guy, forgot his name)
He was douche bag that tried to hide fucking doors that had been smashed on the Rubicon. He was the only fucking owner - and truck had 53K miles on it so I thought all was good - but as noted above, 50K miles on the Rubicon compared to 200K well cared for miles - does make a difference.

Good luck

Never trust a Russian (aka communist enemy). They are still shady/bitter from their failed communist experiment creating an iron curtain dilemma. They are the rudest mofo's on the planet to boot, just saying:). That's my experience with communists who finally figured out our way is better but have yet to learn the appropriate way to act in a democratic society. I will never apologize for dissing communists, they deserve every ounce of our disrespect (and then some). F communists and the countries they come from.;):)

Lol - I know. I don't trust any of them around our area selling cars.
To be honest, I didn't think he was Russian - I didnt ever think a Russian would have a decked out Taco and wheel with TTORA folks. And since he was TTORA, I thought all was good.
So much for figuring and assuming.

$5k for a 99 4x4 is reasonable regardless. I would look at the normal wear items like tie rods, ball joints, etc. I bought a 2000 4runner a couple years ago for $5k. Body is a little rough, only had 150k on it, but needed new O2 sensor, new tie rods, leaky steering rack etc. I just fixed it and it is still going.

my brothers 98 runners speedo/odo went out with 250k so I put in my brothers 95 taco cluster to check what could be wrong. It was the cluster and it just happened my friend had cluster with 135k so I swapped it out. If he sells it, he can tell them it, but if they sell it..they may not tell the other person.

I did have a post it note with the original miles and miles on the new cluster at the time, so you can figure out how many miles are on it. I doubt that post it is still posted up.

As long as it's reported to the DOL - so they can make note/title appropriately, great.
If not, then you're a douche.

The title transaction and reported mileage is up to the seller.
When the vehicle is sold with a incorrect or malfunctioning ODO - it needs to be recorded.

its recorded every year during the periodic motor vehicle inspection or otherwise known as a safety check. when transferring title, mileage is also noted…which happened to OPs.

Its just funny, owner 5 must have been the problem. I just love how it states its a "clerical" error.
