Ok, I am not sure what this might be, possibly the notorous automatic flex pate.

Anyhow, now my I got to start my preunner (auto) today and yesterday. Same thing happeneed every time. I turn the key, nothing happens. Turn it on/off several more times then it turns over fine and starts right up.

OCCASIONALLY it will be turning and all of a sudden act like a big load is put on it, but -usually- keeps going and (load quickly leaves) starts up fine.

I'm ganna do some research on it now, then probably call or go in and talk to the dealer about it in a few days and maybe hit on the chick thats in my english class (works there!).

if the starter just clicks, then it is the starter contacts. Go to dealer and buy contacts for about 12-18 dollars for each set, you will need 2 sets. Remove starter, take 3 8mm bolts on cover off to access contacts. Make sure you put them in straight or it will just click on crank like it is now. The contacts in the starters are brass and are horrible about wearing down until they dont make good contact anymore. :)

You better take that thing back to the dealer!

But jpwaters, I highly doubt it is the contacts. Why? Because the starter acts like it comes out, but wont turn the ring gear. Like their is a very heavy load on it...????

Check all your cables and connections from the battery. If they are dirty or loose, they starter may act like it's under a heavly load or not start at all. I had a similar problem on my wife's car where it appeared that teh battery was dead. Lights would dim and such when you would try to start the car. Turns out where the main cables attached to the battery connect were a little corroded. Didn't look very bad, but after a cleaning everything worked fine for 3 more years.
Not saying that's your problem, but it's a quick and easy check.

I’m having a similar problem with my 96. I am noticing that it happens more when the truck is cold. But it also sometimes want turn off. When I start the truck the started wont stop spinning. I can turn the truck off and pull my key out and the started keeps cranking. I need to replace it.

i think i figured out my problem... 05 tacomas cant start unless the clutch is fully depressed. Your taco is an automatic, so its a different story. I realized that i really need to jam my clutch all the way down for it to start. The truck wont even start in neutral unless the clutch is fully depressed. i just need to get use to it,...

haha

Those things have been like that for years. To start in neutral, you just press the 'clutch start cancel' button. At least on prior year models back to 81 that I know of.
