Need a little help here.

My friends car's steering wheel spins, and the wheels don't turn. The steering wheel actually spins quite freely, with no resistance.

About about a week ago, she did hit the curb with it, but it's been driven every day since then.

When she pulled into her parking space, she heard a loud thunk and the wheel was spinning.

It's going to a mechanic tomorrow on the back of a flatbed, but she's trying to figure out if it's worth fixing at this point. Her father believes it's the power steering pump. I'm afraid it might be the rack. It might be something as simple as a linkage. But I don't know steering very well.

Any thoughts?

Pop the hood and look for the steering shaft. It is very easy to see in most cars. Might be the links from the steering shaft down to the knuckle. It should probably still be take to a mechanic, but a least you will know what is wrong with it and not have them rip you/your friend off.

Thank GOD that did not happen on the road whle she was driving! Something in the steering linkage is broken. It could be anywhere between the steering wheel and rack. I'd say it couldn't be that much to fix it.

Rag Joint Might be blown apart, or shaft may be broken

I concur with StemsCornfedTaco. The steering shaft could have also sheered the bolt holding it secure. If that happens, the shaft could have seperated from the column. That happened to me a while ago on the freeway... on a curve. I ended up being 6" from going over a 40' embankment.
