I am looking to buy a used tacoma, and I came across one that has the dealer installed TRD supercharger. The truck has 32,000miles on it. I know they have lean problems, so my question is..Has the damage already been done? I'd love the extra power, but I'd rather have a motor that I dont have to worry about. Also, about how much does it cost to do the fuel upgrades to get it running right? And how about transmission longevity...I've heard there have been some issues with the autos with superchargers, but how about the 5spds, this truck is a 5spd.

Thanks

EDIT: A supercharged truck requires premium fuel, right?

Yes, absolutely prem. fuel. I use Sunoco high. Only my opinion, but I would be leary of a used truck with S/C. Others with more knowledge may disagree. Why not buy a used truck with low mileage and put a new S/C on it? Check with Gadget at URD on upgrades. No info on 5 sp. I have had S/C on for 18 months or more and only had pinging happen 3 times or so and that was a year ago and I attributed it to Cumberland Farms gas. Installed the 7th injector a few months ago and it pulls stronger, especially from 60 to 85 MPH. I do not go much faster than that.

02 Pre Runner; 3.4, auto. TRD S/C with 7th kit, Headers, cat-back air cleaner, boost gauge and asst chrome and lights, suspension.

If I were looking at two trucks that were the same and one had a SC and one was stock and the price was the same I would take the SC. However I am guessing that the person your buying the truck from is charging more because it has the SC. If thats the case I would buy another truck and put the SC on. If you buy the kit on here and have the dealer install it you can get the SC installed for about 2100-2300 or so.

Another note. If the truck is less than three years old you could always buy the extended warranty and that will cover the SC. There is a guy over ad TS that sells them prety close to cost. It was around 650 or so for a 02 DCab if you wanted the PowerTrain warranty for 7 years 100K. Then all you have to do is drive it and not worry about it.

Later,

i have installed 2 URD fuel kits in motors that have been supercharged for over 80,000..one was drove hard all its life and the other was more "babied". both are still very strong and running good, get the truck and do the fuel kit, youll be glad you did.

thanks guys....As for if he is charging more for the truck because it is supercharger, it is at a Ford Dealership, and they dont even know that it is supercharged. As of right now I dont think I could deal with using premium fuel...plus if I had the s/c I would be tempted to spend $$ on headers and exhaust and all that good stuff...I think i'll have to pass on this one.
Thanks for the input though.

Here in CA with the already high fuel prices, premium gas doesn't concern me much. It's virtually always $.20 above regular. If gas is $.99, $1.20 for premium seems like a jump. now if gas is $3.00, $3.20 isn't much more by comparison. TRDOLMAN's S/C'd truck gets better gas mileage than stock (21mpg), so if you figure all the mods get you more power and mileage, it may be cheaper to run premium gas on a modded truck with a light foot than regular gas on a regular truck, assuming gas prices are high.

Just a thought.

Key phrase there is "with a light foot"...that is one thing I do not have.
