Timing Belt Tool Q?

3469 Views 28 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Trevor 3blacktoys
Is there any other tool besides the Blue Point / Snap on Tensioner Tool that I can buy localy that works the same? I need it by this weekend and Snap On said it'd be a few weeks.

I will be making a pulley holding tool so that is covered, and also have a torque wrench that goes up to 250 ft lbs.......

I thought my Dad had everything (Diesel Mech), but he doesn't.......
Do I also need a pulley tool??

I am giong off of the write up on toy4x4.net

Thanks, Trevor

I was hoping you'd chime in......Good call on the local chapter......I'll put some posts up....
I was going to build a holding tool like on 4x4.net .......I'll figure that one out......

So there is no other Co. that makes a tensioner like that huh? Man, that sucks.....

I called Toyota SST, they don't make one.......
I called Snap-On - OnLine store and they got me one. I will have it this FRI. (next day air) which is perfect....ended up costing $65.00 dam dollars but oh well.........
I might swing by the local HF on the way home and p/u one of those chain wrenches if they are only $10.00...Thanks!!!!
Trevor
DAMIT !!!! I can next day that one for $20.00 cheaper!!!!
Thanks!!! Maybee I will cancel my Snap on order.......

Edit - Nevermind...only be $10.00 cheaper.....I'll stay w/ snap-on....

PM me if you want to work something out so you don't have to pay Snap-on overnight the tools-
I've loaned out the tool before - usually just local members though-

My guess is that you're OK with it- $60 bucks is better than paying someone else $300 bucks plus you get to keep the tool :)
THe other suggestion would be to rally up a couple of locals to split the cost- since its a valuable but infrequently used item.
Yea, I'm saving like $500.00 If I do the Labor myself, so $60.00 is def. okay w/ me.
I really appreciate the offer though....thats awesome.....
I'm gonna attempt this on Sat at my Dad's garage....I might end up on here w/ some questions.......(hopefully not).....Thanks!!

Yea, well Toyota of Vancouver, WA sucks balls.......They wanted over $600.00 just to do the timing belt then Add. couple hundred for the Water pump.....I even said it was just right there!!! but yea, I didin't even bother asking them about the other crap I'm replacing......They were looking in the book just adding all the labor hours up...I'm not about to go there.....

Of course you can borrow the tool, hate to see it never get used again......
The new Costco by the new Krispie Creme (andreson?).........
I am up in the heights by Dairy Queen.......are you on ever on the Oregon board?
Trevor
Great. Thanks, will do.
How hard is the process for the crank/cam seals? I don't have my manual w/ me....
Thanks! Trevor
I just wanted to thank you guys......Last weekend I did all the belts/hoses/and cam/crank seals...water pump....Everything went great, that snap on tool def. helps alot.....and the chain pipe wrench I p/u @ harbor freight for $10.00 worked awesome......it took about 4hrs all in.(woulda been 3 if we didn't do seals)....I think the hardest part was taking the cam pulleys off to replace the cam seals.........
Thanks guys.........

Yes it was!......I origonaly p/u a belt type wrench instead of chain......well the belt I didn't pay attention to was a V belt....yea, it didn't work......A tip that I found out also was to cut the factory T-belt and fold it around the crank pulley a couple of times so the chain wouldn't hurt the pulley(used the same belt piece on the cams). I also pulled the radiator out so we could get an impact in to break the crank bolt.....(extra 10 minutes to pull the radiator).......Truck runs perfect.....I'm glad I didn't take it to the stealer.......
