Hey yall, I just picked up my truck from firestone. My front-left tire is cupping pretty good on the outerside of the tread. The tires are 265/70/16 BFG AT on an 02 doublecab 2wd TRD with 45000 miles. The tires have 20k on them and still have a lot of tread left and have been fine until now. I figured it was the alignment because I fell asleep at the wheel and hit a curb. Anyways, I have the lifetime alignment so I took it in and alignment was dead on. He said that due to the heavier weight of the tires, I could have either worn struts or shocks or both. However, the tires are only around 4# heavier than the stock tires. Also I go offroad 3-4 times a year and it's just deer trails, nothing rough. So could they be right or is there something else? As always I appreciate the help!

Do you rotate regularly?...like every 5K miles or less? If you don't, they will cup.

If the cupping is on the same side you hit the curb on, I would check the rim, it may be bent. The tire may be damaged, bruised and out of round. The shock may be damaged, at 45,000 miles your shocks are probably ready to be changed.

Cupping is a sign of a worn suspension. Are your ball joints and tie-rod ends in good shape? Is your shock worn out?
I'm with showstop. Something is worn, or bent. Tie rods sound like a good place to start. If the rim is not bent, and you are sure, it is possible to bend a spindle. Usually you bend other things along with a spindle; they are pretty tough. The tire shop should be able to spin that rim and see if it is bent, unless they aren't very experienced.

I'm assuming then that the shocks are bad as well as the spindle on that side since that's the side that took the impact at 50mph. I will probably let this set of tires wear out and then get the front end fixed.

I had a faulty rack and mine cupped the left front tire pretty bad..A bad inner tie rod end will do the same thing..It allows the "toe" adjustment to constantly change, therefore cupping the tire..
