I have an 04' 5-speed 4x4 non-trd Tacoma and just recently got a trailer hitch for it. I was wondering what does the "towing package" for the tacoma consist of, I think the only difference is a different cooling fan...???
Thanks

Not sure what engine you have, but the stock fan clutch will work fine. I've put 62K on my 99 V6 5 spd with factory gears and 32" tires and without a factory tow package, towing a 19ft boat half that mileage, in Texas summer heat and never once had an issue with temps. If you properly maintain the cooling system it will work fine.

From personal experience the best place to get any dealer parts is from TRDPart4U. Chris and Barb have been great. However as stated before your stock clutch may be ok, depending on what you plan on towing. Personally, I would go with an electric fan replacement before I would invest on a new clutch.

I could be wrong, but I thought the max towing capacity for our trucks was 5K with tow package(mainly due to the frame capability rather than the engine power). I think I remember it was like 3500 w/out the tow package. So a 6K lb boat might be unsafe. I couldn't find the post on the tow capacities. I'll let others chime in and verify.

I have a V6 and I will be towing a 6k lb boat around 10-15 miles, only a handful of times a year... what would you guys reccomend??
might be all right without the hd fan clutch that is part of the tow package. 6,000lbs is a lot for a tacoma to tow, got a bigger truck or a buddy who will tow it for you? I wouldnt want anyone to pull out in front of me with that much weight behind me, hope your boat trailer has brakes.

I got the upgraded fan clutch. I can't really tell too much of a difference except that the fan roars more at low speeds than the old (orange) one. As far as towing, the gauge stays right in the middle. As far as 6K, the fan upgrade increases towing from 3,500 to 5,000, which still seems kind of marginal. I wouldn't try 6,000 with one of these trucks.

When I first got my truck, I tried to find out what you get with the factory towing package. The only thing I could find was the fan clutch, the factory wiring kit/black box, and the receiver hitch.

The factory wiring kit/black box is nice. You don't have to worry about moisture getting into your wiring harness when you splice in an aftermarket black box.

I would be pretty wary about towing 6k. You might have the power to get going, but will you have the power to stop? Kinda' like 4wd will get you going through a lot more snow and ice, but you won't be able to stop any quicker.

I would worry more about the swerving. Anyone can get a trailer with breaks, but for our 3700 lb truck to pull a 6000 lb boat,… wow. The factory manual actually says the combined weight of the truck and trailer should not exceed 9K lbs. Now our trucks curb weight is 3700 add driver and passengers and tools and the rest of the stuff and you are well over the recommended weight even if it was a 5K lb load on the trailer.
