i am gonna change my trans fluid and filter and have already selected which brand of products i will be using based on my research. my question is there anythin i need 2 know. i plan on draining fluid, replacing filter, replacing gasket, then reassmble and fill back up. we couldnt find it in the owners manual about how it held or what kind but the book at the auto parts store said atf+3 and 5.0 quarts. is that correct. i have just over 66000 miles on it and the previous owner has no service records of when it was last done so i plan on doin it just b/c i want my stuff right. thanks in advance, oo and its a 99 prerunner v6 auto extra cab.

There is more then 15 quarts of ATF in the system. The pan holds less then a 3rd of it. To change all the fluid you will need to flush it.

When i did my flush i did it by draining whats inside the pan (about 4 quarts worth) since the fluid looked pretty good i didnt bother droping the pan. Disconnected the line going into the tranny, i had my buddy start the truck up and filled a gallon jug, turn the truck off and fill the pan with 4 more quarts. Repeat the process till 20 quarts is used. I used redline D4 synthetic in mine. Good luck.

ok thanks for that info, so i really need more like 20 bottles o atf+3 to change it out and to change my filter. they had valvoline atf+3 that i got, now that i gotta buy more like 20 than 5 mines as well go and get a good kind. any more advice??
