I recently made some modifications to a 5VZ-FE in a 2004 Tacoma, Double Cab, 4X4, in the way of a TRD S/C, 7th Inj., Headers and cat back system. These have all been great improvements, however I am suffering a significant problem due directly to these modifications and I am wondering if I am alone.

I have had the chance to do some very lengthy reading from a wide range of resources, including URD, talking directly with TRD and reading up on tuning. From what I have been able to gather, when my engine is put under a boost induced High Gear/Low RPM state, I witness a very audible pinging that brings detonation to mind.

I have only been able to come up with a couple of factors that might be in play. I have had consistant feedback from all around me that the 7th Injector does'nt kick in until 50% throttle. My pinging only happens when I am in high gear and low RPM (under 3000) and I increase throttle. I've heard that the timing on the 7th Inj. ECU might be way off and if that is the case, TRD will only offer to refund the kit, not re-map or re-tune the Inj. I have talked to URD about their Injector Controller and it sounds like it may fix things.

I have also thought of removing my 7th Inj. and putting Bosch 318cc in place of the stocks and changing the fuel pump to a 190 LPH and learning the hard road of tuning and getting an FTC and trying that road.

I turn it over to a crowd that knows tacomas best becuase we all drive them everyday. I want nothing less than maximum horsepower and torque and I'm basically down to needing to know what will give me these results; keeping the 7th Inj. OR ditching it, upgrading my stock system and tuning that.

Thanks so much for any advice.

Chris,
I have a few questions that I need answers to in order to try and help.
Did you have the 7th installed or did you do it yourself?
If you did it yourself did you put the IK20 plugs in it?
Did you put the TRD 160 thermostat in it?
What is the boost reading on your boost guage when the pinging occurs?
Do you have any idea of what your AFR's are at WOT?

One thing you can do---put the 190 Walbro pump in it. The stock fuel system is right on the edge with the 7th. The pump has to be changed if you go to the URD fuel kit anyway.

My truck never had a ping problem that I know of but I have a lot of experience with the 7th injector. If you would rather PM me that's OK too.

Oh one more thing seriously look into getting the URD AIC setup with fuel pump and you can get the 2.2 pulley and you will have one moving truck.
You will need to get it tuned up. ie the fuel curve.

USE THE ECT MODE FOR THE TRANS. IT WILL SHIFT QUICKER GETTING AWAY FROM THE LOW GEAR HIGH BOOST PING

Dave is right. If you haven't changed your plugs, you need to change them first. I had a pinging problem until I changed my plugs (Denso IK20 gapped to .032). A lot of people here will prob tell you to change to the URD kit. But since you have the 7th, I would just get the URD AIC.

Thanks for the replies everyone. To answer TRDOLMAN's questions:

I did not do any of the TRD modifications. A Toyota dealer did in Goldsboro, NC. Spark plugs where changed to the IK20's and a 160 thermastat was put in as well. The boost reading at the time the pinging happens is anywhere from 1-5, depending on when the tranmission drops a gear to compensate for lack of power. I have no way of reading AFR's or any other pertinent measurements at this time.

I am in agreement with changing the fuel pump at a minimum and URD is actually steering me towards their AIC kit. This is alright with me, as long as I can have 100% control over the Inj., both fuel and timing.

Is the message then since I spent the money on the 7th Inj., to make it work right instead of ditching it and upgrading my stock Inj.'s and fuel pump and tuning that setup? Which of these two options will give me the most horsepower and torque?

If it were me, I would get the AIC. In fact I did. You will have control of the fuel the 7th puts out. You can tune some of your closed loop starting from about 0 psi and be able to tune the open loop as well. You will nothave control over timing however. Very few have had timing issues with the 7th. I would get control of the fuel first then go from there. Get your wallet out because you are going to need a scan tool, laptop, and a wide band to be able to tune properly. As far as which way will give the most power is a toss up. My setup with the 7th, AIC, WI, and smaller pulley makes 275 RWHP @ 313 ft lbs of torque. You can see the run sheets in the webshots link in my signature.

Hey Dave, do you have any of your older fuel maps saved? I want to compare mine with another.

Troy, I don't think you will be able to compare fuel maps. I tried something Gadget suggested and configured my AIC to 3 cylinder 2 stroke. What that does is pulse the injector twice as often for half the time. I think it makes the truck run a lot smoother. Your fuel map won't look anything like mine. The only other map I have is the one that came preloaded on the AIC and you have that one already. Sorry

hey, i was reading about a 7th injector problem a guy was having with his truck and i'm getting in that boat as we speak. i have a 98 taco thats been factory supercharged for years. drove it without a hitch for years then one day woke up and it ran like shit. took it in and after 3 weeks of screw around by the local toyota dealer they figured out it slipped 2 degrees out of timing. they changed everything but still wasn't itself. took it to a local toyota engine guru who ended up changing a knock sensor wire, tuned the engine and supercharger and out in a 180 degree thermostat. it ran much better but still trips a check engine, knock sensor code under hard acceleration and doesn't quite have the balls it did. please help he told me 7th injector kit or larger injectors+fuel management piggyback system

I added the URD 7th injector kit and a 2.2 pulley to a 2003 v6 with headers and exhaust and it fixed my high gear low rmp ping. I had to change the fuel map because I live in CA and the fuel here sucks. Or run 94+.
