Hi All

I saw a thread on here that talked about some of toyotas newer 3.? engines used in the car line up that are not suitable for truck use. I looked around and even made a few google searches but am still at a loss. What exactly are some of the differences between say a 3.4 double overhead cam engine one may find in a truck, and one found in a car ? I mean an engine that displaces 3400 CC's is the same size as that in a car. I understand the need for an engine in a truck that can withstand more abuse - so what is different ?

Thanks

I hope you dont get flamed for this question. Maybe you should post it in the newbie question section. Maybe you should ask an engine builder what the difference is.

Damn I hope not , I didn't even see that and figured this was the right place. Maybe a moderator will move it for me.

I'll turn off the torch....The truck specific engines probably have different cams, and different ignition/ timing. Some, maybe not Toyota, have heavier crankshafts. Mostly designed to deliver more torque, while car specific engines build rpm's quicker. May have different smog allowances. Related to towing, heavier payloads. Nowadays, with so much computer control, with smaller engines, there is probably less difference in hard parts, and just different settings for ignition and injectors.

I got into a discussion on this topic involving Ford V-8 motors. A knowledgeable mechanic informed me that, in addition to intake, cylinder heads, and timing (to produce more low end grunt), the engine blocks are different; stronger and heavier. Over the years the MFR has resorted to thinner blocks in passenger vehicles to save weight and fuel. These blocks are not considered strong enough for truck use. Perhaps this could also apply to Toyota?

Most of the cars are front wheel drive and the engines are mounted tranversally (sideways) so the motor mounts are in different locations bolt patern for bell housing is probably different also. This would be my guess as to why they won't work.
