I was searching the forum lookin for squeaking noises. Well i found it.... I just wanna make sure its correct.

I have a 98 Tacoma 4x4 2.7l. I have had some serious sqeaking at high speeds for a long time now. Is that deffinitley a U joint? at first i thoguht it was the lining of my tool box top so i replaced that but it didnt help.... How much does it cost to replace a rear U-joint? I am pretty good on my truck so would u recomend i could do it or should i take it to a shop and what kinda money am i lookin at spending. Thanks

Could be a U-joint, but I have had some strange noises too and I put it up on jack stands and hade my wife run it through the gears, the noise was coming from the Carrier bearing in the center of the driveshaft, I don't know if yours has a two piece drive shaft (ex cab?) or not but I hade mine replaced and it took care of the problem.

Have you lifted your tacoma? That seemed to be the culprit behind wearing the bearing down so fast for me. I am searching for an axle shim to correct the problem.

Since your from NC, how many other NC tacoma owners do we have out there? I want a chapter for us!

Yea so it might be a lot of problems i have a 3" coil spacer lift on my reg cab tacoma. So i thought it was the u joints. Im not to familar yet with the tacoma set up so i guess i will play with it for a while :)

There is a message board up for NCTTORA but its not official yet. I really wanna get one going and im almost positive that there would be plenty of people to start one up....

I just changed the carrier bearing in my 95 last week. It was an easy job. In fact there's a write-up on this forum with step by step pics, torque specs and everything. Don't pay too much for that thing either. I've seen them for 90$+. I got one from a local parts place for 70$ exact same part.

the u joints are pretty cheap, and not that hard to change. be sure you by one with a grease nipple, they come with and without. You mentioned a squeaking noise. i have a 96 reg cab with the 2.7, and i trace the squeaking in my truck to the leaf springs. look at the ends, and you can tell if that is it. you can see if have been rubbing. i took and old tennis shoe, and ripped the rubber off the bottom, and make some homemade bushing to put under the ends, helped with the squeak. i flexed the truck in a ditch, and used a flat head screwdriver to work em in. just a few of my thoughts. hope you get it figured out, it is a head ache!! (the squeak)
