Start writing letters to all of your elected officials. Make it clear that any attempts to close public land to the public will result in them losing support from you come election time.

I think everyone would do well to point out that more damage actually results from shutting trails down. This is because of the concentration of activity does not give nature a chance to work so the damage from heavy use is greater. It also takes a lot longer for natural recovery to work. If folks were better schooled in how the environment actually works, they would see that. What we need to do is start advocating that for every mile of trail that is closed, they should open at least two more to replace it. That way the heavy concentration of activity would be avoided and the overall results would be much more beneficial to everyone. Sure there are ass hats out there that will continue to be a problem but every group of users have those to contend with, even the hikers.
I think everyone would do well to note that prohibition of any sort has never worked or is never likely to ever work.

Great points, the letter writing campaign has been underway for months now. Great point Dick about the increased damage due to user concentration. Thanks. ..Steve
