What backspacing does everyone run?

I am looking at getting 16x8 rims to go along with the 285/75 tires I have. They will be going on a 99 and I don't want them to interfere with the upeer A-arm or the frame. I have 5 inches of lift. So what's everybody got?

3.75"-4.25" will work; it depends on how far you want them to stick out.

which sticks out farther... the smaller number or the bigger number.... like 3.75-4?
less backspacing (smaller #), makes the tires stick out further, requires more lift to clear the fenders and adds more wear and tear to the suspension and especially the steering components.

Just curious. What is your lift increment, and what suspension are you running?

I have an '03 Tacoma reg cab prerunner 2wd and would like to run 33x12.50x15s.
In general, 33x12.50s require 5-6" of lift to really 'clear' them. Some still rub even with 6" of lift. If you are willing to do some sawzall trimming and hammering you can technically make them work with 3" or so depending on the type/brand of lift.

and then theres the needed regearing ;)

Hytenor,
Just wondering how those 4.88's work with the 2.7. i have a '98 with 33x12.50's and haven't regeared yet. Its not the ideal mpg/power setup in the world! I just didn't know how far down the list of gears I have to go to get my power back and maybe a litle more, but if 4.88's work well with 33's then that is great. Also to coment on this thread a little more. I have Old Man Emu's with a 2" BL and i don't have any problems with rubbing either on road or off so that's only about 4.25-4.5" of lift and it works fine.
If you have 12.50s you can't be running 4.5" backspacing...won't work ;) The tires will really rub the frame rails on turns and the spindle towers whenever w/o going to less bs than the stock 4.5". With the 2.7, that amount of lift should work with only minor rubbing if you really try hard ;) When I had the 882s/N91s I had 3+" and could rub the inner fender plastic on full compression. A 1" bl would have solved that.

I initially went to 4.56s up from OE 4.30s (that at the time I thought were 3.91s cuz I trusted Toyota's website...oops) when I got the 33s. The power was back to near stock but I discovered I needed a bit more for the hauling I do and the steep, high Sierra trails I like to run. So....on went the 4.88s.
Hwy mileage is about the same or better under 65mph but drops a bit if I cruise faster than that. In-town mileage went up quite a bit, however.
On the trail the difference is huge compared to the 4.56s and that surprised me. I can also go up mild inclines on the hwy in 5th which I couldn't do before.

wow you must of spent a lot of money changing gear to gear :D
I don't even want to know, LOL

Joe momma wins the prize for most gear/tire changes, however...something like 5, LOL

Sorry to jump in but, I was just about to start a post....

Question about BS... Is it the less the backspace the further the wheel/tire will stick out? Example 3.75" BS would be wider/stick out more than 4" Bs?

Do I understand that correctly?

Thanks,

J
correct. less bs and the tires stick out further requiring more lift to clear the fenders.

I have a 99 just as you. I run a 32x11.50 Tire. The Rim is 15x10 with 3.625 backspacing and everything is fine.
kinda wide wheel for an 11.50" tire ;) better be careful when airing down.
