Hello all,

My 2001 TRD 4x4 is making a couple of really weird noises. It all started yesterday when I was on the freeway and I heard what sounded like maybe a bearing that is about to seize making a really faint noise. It almost sounded like the air rushing by the window rubber when the rubber gets old and doesn’t seal quite as well but that isn’t what it was. It sounded as though the noise was coming from either underneath or behind the cab of the truck. The noise seemed to mellow out by the time I made it home so I put off crawling under the truck until later.

This morning I started the truck up and heard a really loud noise that sounded like the squeal of a bearing that’s going bad in an idler pulley. This particular noise was coming from the engine compartment. I took off and drove around a bit and the sound stopped after about 5-10 minutes. I stopped and popped the hood and didn’t see or hear anything wrong at that point. I figured all was well again so I hopped on the freeway and headed to work. While on the freeway, the noise from yesterday reappeared and sounded as though it was coming from behind or underneath the cab of the truck again. About halfway to work, that noise also stopped. Once I made it to work, I crawled underneath and took a look. Both driveshafts are still securely mounted and none of the bolts that hold them in place are loose. I didn’t see anything else that looked out of place either.

I had the truck at Claremont Toyota just over two weeks ago for a 60,000 mile service so I’m wondering what they may have done to perhaps cause these noises. A few days after I had it serviced, I started to smell burning grease and saw that they had over lubricated the U-joints (which splattered all over the exhaust). I still smell burning grease and It has been over two weeks since I had my truck serviced.

Any idea what may be going on?

are all of your belts tight? Does it squeal more when you rev the engine? If so one or more of the belts may be a little loose especially if they were just replaced.

When I first heard the loud squealing this morning, it did appear to be linked to engine RPM and I heard it at a dead stop. After driving around for close to 10 minutes, the squealing sound went away. If I had been thinking this morning, I would have stopped to see if I could locate the sound.

I just got back from lunch and my truck didn't make a peep. Not one strange noise as I drove to my credit union, then to Burger King, Target, and then back here to work.

Interestingly, I called my mechanic about an hour ago and he suggested that it may be the belts as well.

I was driving accross some of what they like to call roads up in the Victor Valley area on Saturday night (the night before I first heard one of the noises). I drove across a few miles worth of a dirt road that has some pretty gnarly washboard texture to it. No mud though.

I started my truck up again this morning to head to work and it was quiet at first. I drove down the street and the noise returned although not nearly as loud as it was yesterday. I pulled over and popped the hood and of course the noise went away. From inside the truck, it does sound like it's coming from the engine compartment. It sounds like a squeaky pulley so maybe it is one of my belts slipping. The only other thing that I can come up with is that it may actually be the bearing in one of the pulleys.

I don't know what the noise is when you're on the road, but I'd put money on your startup noise being a belt. I've had more problems with belt noise AFTER a vehicle's been serviced; ie not taking the time to tension it properly etc. I'd bring it back to them if I were you.

I have a simliar noise that happened when I get above 50mph and only when Iam cruising along. If I give it a lot of gas, it goes away. Same if I dont give it any gas at all. I only have 30k on mine. Anyone else?

Well, I haven't heard a single peep out of my truck for two days now... weird. Hopefully it stays this way but I'm listening for even the slightest unusual noise every time I drive my truck now.
