I'm getting out of a Jeep Rubicon, (Tranny blew after 62.000 miles, automatic), and getting into a Tacoma. I'm new to Toyota's, and need advice. I wouldn't mind a base model regular cab 4x4 stick with a 4 banger. I think I'll be fine running 31"s out here in the desert, but will the stock gearing/ 4 cyl pull those tires? It will be a DD mainly, but it will see some steep old mining trails on the weekends too. Am looking at getting the newest Tacoma I can afford, (around $18.000). so, 08-10 would be my guess.:)

in stock form, toyota trucks are damn capable of impressing you.
i've had 4 cylinders and v6's. manual and auto. 2wd, prerunner, and 4wd.
each and all did things and took me places i never thought i could get to, or out of.

the more power, the more gearing, the more traction, the more suspension, the more fun.

lockers are invaluable, but not necessary.
ask anyone with a locker if they wish they didn't have it, and ask those without a locker if they'd like one.

as far as running a manual transmission, to each his own, but i'll stick with automatics.

A local member here in Houston is running 35s on stock 4.10s on his 4 banger, he doesn't complain too much.
