I've been gathering tools to rebuild a transmission. From the writeup's I've seen, they always stress "quality bearing splitter".

So what features make for a quality device?

I had a harbor f. bearing splitter that lasted about 5 differential builds. When it broke it took out a good bearing. It could have damaged the pinion if I would have not caught it before it hit the ground.

ok, so just looking for quality material?

HF wasn't on my list of vendors to shop at. I've read good things about splitters from Napa (supposed to be fairly cheap with decent quality. I don't need top of the line, obviously this isn't a production shop with daily use, I'm looking for middle of the road.

Brian, What size would you recommend? My completely uneducated guess is that 3-4" should be sufficient, or should I be looking in the 5" range?

I'm not sure if the advertised size is for the size of the bearing, or something else. I wouldn't think I'd run into any bearing over 3" dia

Snap-on and never look back. You will pay for it though.
