Hey guys, I have a 91 4x4 xtra cab toy with nothing but 235/75R15 bfg AT instead of the stock 225's. I'm looking at getting a set of 15x7 (i think, maybe 8) wheels with some 31x10.5 bfg AT from a friend for $225. I'm looking at trying to get some more power and I was thinking of a K&N filter with a new header and exhaust system. Any suggestions. Right now I do not really plan on lifting the truck but that could change. Do I need to re-gear? My gut feeling says yes as with the 235's its kind of a pig especially going up hill. What would be good gears to go with? If I end up lifting I will probably move up to 33's if possible.

thanks for your time,
matthew

I run 31's with 4.10 gears on my 86 4runner with 230K on the clock no problem. It's a four cylinder so I don't expect much out of it.

33's you could run 4.56's or 4.88's just know that 4.88's will cause the truck to be in the higher RPM range while doing freeway speeds.

the only problem with a higher rpm is that, at 3000rpms in 5th gear doing about 70mph I have a slight but noticable vibration from what feels like the engine, I can't really push it above that point otherwise it feels like I'm only pushing my engine to its grave even quicker. Any thoughts on what it could be? Thanks,

Matt

Yep, the 22RE isn't the most powerful engine ever made, but it will last forever. I have an '88 on 32"s with stock gears and over 180,000 miles and it does okay. You just have to use 4th gear (or even 3rd  ) on long hills.

I wouldn't go through the hassle/expense of regearing just for 31"s. Wait for gears until you get 33"s or bigger.

[off topic-TiTRD] Rich- your "pics of my junk" link wasn't working for me. Did you get any pics of your new beater yet? When is it hitting the trails?[/off topic]
