so I finally picked up my donor '82 yota today... woohoo, sas here I come :saw: . my question is.. I thought the older yota axles were stronger, but the rear axle in the '83 looks pretty wimpy and I was going to put it in the rear of the '88. which rear axle do you guys think is actually stronger?

Not sure on strength but I would use the new axle less wear and tare on it.

88 is wider by 3", larger and stronger tubes. I would run the 88 rear.
