I'm looking into a shop press to be able to do my own axles, gears, and about anything else that I need to press. I can get a sweet deal on a 12 ton but I'm not sure if that is enough. The 20 or 40 ton presses are much more though. Has anyone found that a 12 isn't enough. It would do everything from bending to bearings, but I don't want to invest in the wrong tool. Of course bigger is better, but is it necessary? Thanx

What's the price difference you're looking at? I honestly can't remember the size the shop I worked in had... never used it much. I always used the mechanical hand press when I could.

That being said, I've never regretted buying something more powerfull than I needed at the time.

id go with the heavier ton, cuz itll suck if u have to press something thats beyond the limit of the 12, its better in the long run to have more than not enough and pissed off about it

If you ever want to do tacoma wheel bearings, the 12 ton one is not going to cut it.
