I did a search but could not find a real clear answer. I have a V6 4x4 5 spd and when i let the clutch out it makes a whinning noise. Also if i rev it in neutral with the clutch out it gets higher pitched with the rpms. When I'm driving i can hear it whining as im accelerating and shifting a little bit. It is not too loud right now but it seems to have gotten a little worse lately and definetly noticeable. A friend heard me coming down the street slowing down from 1st gear and said " Whats up with your tranny... sounds like the throw out bearing" and then i got worried. Im headed to the deseret this weekend. Does this seem to be the problem? Should i be worried about this? How much work is changing the throw out bearing if that is the problem? Thanks

More than likely it is your throw out bearing. That noise you described is identical to one going out. I have changed them out on an 84 several times. They are not too bad to replace on the older ones, not for sure on the newer models. It just requires you to drop your transmission to put the new one in. If you do decide to do it, I would advise you to go ahead and put a new clutch and pressure plate in as well. You can usually buy all 3 together for a pretty good price. anywhere from 250 up to whatever you want to spend. If you do not want to tackle the project yourself, which there is no shame in, it is a project. I would find a smaller transmission place, ask around, find someone who will give you a good deal, and usually they can knock it out in an afternoon without setting you back to far in the wallet. If it isn't your DD, then It's not a fix at the moment requirement, prob not smart to keep driving the piss out of it forever, but I have put it off a while on my old truck before i got around to it. Like stated above me, put it in 4-lo and go. If it is your DD, I would start looking for a clutch/pressureplate/throwout bearing assembly and pick you out a weekend and get some buds over to help.

Sounds good. Thanks for the help. I don't have much cash right now but I'll try and get to it as soon as possible. I also have the problem of my clutch squeaking when I'm pressing it... I looked this up to and people had used chain lube and white lithium grease under the boot.. and i tried that and it always works for a little bit but not long... when i take out my clutch what is it that i need to replace to stop that squeaking.

Usually when a throwout bearing is shot, it will make a "clunkin noise" that will rise with the rpm's. You can sometimes feel it in the pedal as well.

The whinning noise (which I describe it as my ******* supercharger) is purely just the tranny gears meshing...

Pop it in 4lo and just drive straight and listen to the noise. It should be louder now...

People have replaced a bushing or the entire spring assembly. I think there is a writeup on Yotatech...
