I dont get it??? We have like three threads going now on people complaing about MPG. I look at this on two points.

1) Physics - Larger vehicles are going to get less MPG. It takes more engery to move a big rock then it does a small stone. TRUCKS WILL ALWAYS GET LESS MPG THAN A GEO METRO.

2) Who cares about a few hundred bucks a year. You just spent top dollar to get a toyota that your not going to have to dump a bunch of money into, do you really care about 18 bucks a month? Most of us pay more than that for insurance because we drive trucks instead of Volvo's and I have heard very little bitiching because of that?

Just to put it into perspective.

If you drive 15K a year the difference between 17mpg and 20 mpg is 264 dollars a year or 22 bucks a month.

Just to further make the point. My Trucks Averages 18mpg. According to the EPA a Camary averages 26MPG. The difference between 18mpg and 26mpg is 513 in a year. That averages out to 42.75 a month. Most of spend WAY more than that on Mods.

Last point - Cars depreciate at a greater rate than Trucks. A 2000 Taco had a MSRP of 24,378 in 2000. Today that truck has a KBB value of 14,500. A 2000 Camary had an MSRP of 26,198 and today has a KBB vaue of 10,500. Camary lost 59 % of its value and the taco lost 40.5% of its value. So the MPG is COMPLETLY offset by the depreciation. All figures are from Cars.Com

So quit yer bitching!!!

Funny you should write this. I almost brought this up on the big gearing thread a few days back where there seemed to be a focus on this.

Couldn't understand why so many were concerned about gas mileage changes when their mods gave them so much more performance benefit than the additional cost of gas.

However, when gas gets to $3/gallon...

I have issues with how much more crap I put in the air or not. I could care less about the price.
Now the 5 foot blondes bringing home groceries in a Excursion, Hummer or Escalade that get less than 10 MPG?? That is just plain stupid.

I plan on getting a really nice second car that get's over 30MPG for some road trips and keeping the truck just for work ( Off road, snowy weather ). I also plan on doing some mods to get the milage up as high as I can get it.

I live in the wilderness and have a very, very gut instinct at what we do to our FAR too important natural world, I can't ignore it.

Better yet, are those who are trading in their trucks and suv's to get better mileage and end up with more payments than if they would have kept the truck and paid it off!

It doesn't seem like a smart thing to spend thousands to save a few bucks at the pump. Hell I make some pretty stupid investments(I have a red one in the garage). But the gas mileage argument doesn't make sense in the long term
to trade one vehicle for another.

Gas is still cheap. Just buy your beer at the store and don't drink it at a bar and you have made up the difference each week ;)

If you wine about your mpg you should have bought a desiel.
You are the second person to say that to me today. Its complete BS. We have 6 Desils at work and none of them get better than 15 mpg even on the freeway. We have a brandnew Ford Super Duty and it only get 12-14 even just on the freeway.

If you are buying a diesel truck to save fuel your not very smart. The initial cost and maintenance of the diesel will not be recovered with fuel savings. You buy diesel trucks to haul things. They will use less fuel than gasoline engines pulling similar loads and will pull those loads with much more confidence. But if it's all about saving a few bucks at the pump your looking at diesels in the wrong light.

People just like to bitch about something...anything. It's human nature I guess. And as long as were bichin', I'd like to complain about all the dang clothes being worn by the girl in Bryanccfshr's avatar. That's just not right!

buy a geo metro as a daily driver and you will save like 90 bucks a month on gas, although you will feel kinda gay driving a geo metro, somethings are just not worth the money you save.

The ones that get me are the guys who place the monster tires on there trucks and an extra 200 lbs in light bars and all there off road goodies and then do a bunch of mods to get more horse power , talk about a stick shift so they can get off the line quicker, do 80 on the highway and then "bitch" because they are getting such bad gas milage. :)
The real test is the guy who lives in Iowa or Kansas and drives a stiock Tacoma on the highway every day to work. Want to bet that he will be real close or over what the sticker rating was? When they test these things for MPG they don't do it off road and they don't do it in the mountains I live in.
My driving is mountains every day and I live in a place that some would call off road. With my 01, 2.7, auto with 16" tires and a tool box on the back can get 18 mountains and 22 on the highway. The last truck I owned was a Chevy Suburban 1/2 ton 4x4 raised 4" with 16.5 wheels and a 350 engine. I got 12 off road and 15 highway :xcrybaby: .

That's a great perspective! I'd wager a guess that most guys spend more than that on beer a month. ;)

We are blessed to live in a country with just about the lowest fuel costs in the free world. This allows us to pursue our hobby in some of the most beautiful landscape anywhere. We really have so little to complain about and so much to be thankful for...

ok, i admit i bitch about the price of gas, but not really about my mileage. i get mad when i get 18 mpg, but then i think, that's not to bad. i could be getting worse. and about the iowa or kansas driver, i agree. i live in northeast arkansas, where it is pretty flat. i know the original sticker said i would get between 18 and 21, which is exactly what i am gettin today. not an improvement, but also not bad for a truck that is almost 9 years old with bad oxygen sensors, and a bad cat. i am about to lift it, and add tires, which i know will hurt it, but, i think it wil be worth it for the looks and impovement in offroad performance. I hate to see gas prices rising, but damn, in germany, they pay upwards of 5 bucks. damn!!! that is unbelievable. just thought i would add my 2 cents

Your right about the gas prices compaired to other areas but one thing that makes a difference is where you live right here in the states. California is paying a whole lot more then we do in WV but they make a whole lot more money on the average then we do. Here in WV the average is about $2.10 for 87. But the price of gas is really getting off subject on this thread.
I'm still with you as far as price goes and I agree that raising the Tacomas and all the other mods just seem to go with this truck and when I look at mine I think it's begging me to "Dress it up" :) But i can't afford it so it will just have to be happy with the way I take care of it and for all the off road time we always spend together ;) Mike
