one more question from toyota wizards. If i decided to go with 456 gears instead of the 488 on my truck would that not be enough? ive got the doble cab 2001 tacoma with the 35"pro comps and the 9" lift. Just added the trd supercharger with 7th injector and was looking for more torque!! Only thing is i dont want to be too high on the highway when im cruising 65 or 75 as except for weekends im on the highway!! Ive got stock 410 on there now!! just wanted too ask one more time before i put in my order for gears!! most people around here are telling me not to go any higher than 456 but you guys out there seem to know a little more than them!! any, thanks for everything

I know your last post about this got trashed, but it seems to be the consensus around here that 4.88 gears would put you back to stock and would be good for long highway cruises, and 5.29s would put you lower than stock and give you more torque for city driving and wheeling.

Sorry your first post got butchered. I apologize.

Shane, I suspect you're looking to compromise on gears for the sake of expediency, but IMO you'd be better off to relax & wait for the right gears... you do not want to do this twice! If you want to see how it's calculated that 4.88 would be slightly over stock (but still your best bet), try this calculator: calculator.

Don't post searching for someone to tell you what you want to hear, because eventually you'll hear it (and it will be wrong...) ;)

Good Luck!

I have a V6 manual tranny the truck came stock with 31's and 4.10 gears. I put in 4.56s to correct for the 35" tires. My speedo is within a needle width of being dead on accurate without any speedo fudge boxes. That says it is exactly back to the stock ratio as designed by the factory. If you want more zip off of the line, put in 4.88s but you will pay for it on the highway.

I would run 4.88's. But thats my opinion. It wouldn't matter to me if it was standard or auto wether V6 or 4 banger. I have always ran 4.88's for 33's to 35's. And 5.29's for 35's to 38's. You can't go lower with a tacoma unless you want to modify the housing and have custom gears made. I not believe an older yotas gears will work in a taco. Go luck with the 4.56's but I would run 4.88's.

I knew someone with a 85 4x4 4runner running 6.12's or 6.17's in yota axles pulling 44's. Truck was called 4-play.
