I just wrecked my Tacoma recently. I guess it is going to be totalled. They said I can buy it back for $1800. It books at $9000 and they want 20% for it as salvage. It is actually in really good shape all things considered. Starts and drives. Just the grille, hood, front passenger quarter panel and airbox. Broke some front end stuff. Maybe a tierod or something because the passenger tire is hanging out somewhat like the carnage of the month pic on this site. It's a 98 ext. cab with 100k. I wonder if the rear diff can retro fit onto my wifes 97 runner? I also wonder what it's worth as I am considering parting out the truck. Taco had the locker and her runner does not. Do you think it's worth buying back the truck and parting out? Wonder what the transfer case is worth for example... maybe I can make back my $1800 and then some so I can get a new truck. Please give me your thoughts on what I should do.

See as how the TRD rear end usually goes for $800 or above drum to drum, i'd say you'd at least get your money back.

If it starts & drives - then that's a big plus-
- Look at the main items-
engine
transmission
rear axle w/ locker

If you've got the space & time- I'd go for it

The TRD rear axle goes for at least $800 - you could get your money back based upon the rest of the parts - just depends if you are willing and able to part it out piece by piece and deal with shipping, etc, etc.

I'll buy the throttle body if you decide to part it out.

Sounds like a perfect donor for a solid axle swap as long as the frame isn't tweaked. Some cheap aftermarket fenders and a homebrew front bumper, cheap aftermarket grill and headlights, could be fun. This of course assuming you have the skills, tools and a place to work on it. If you part it out I would think you could easily get 1800 for the drivetrain.

If you decide to part it out what color is the inside. Also how are the doors and what color are they. does it have Bucket seats, Manual hubs, how are the CV's how is the bed? I sure you would be able to get your money backplus keep the axle. If someone parts out a truck most of the parts go quick on here.

I'm not extremely familiar with insurance in these types of situations, so sorry if my question comes across as stupid. But, if it's your truck, why do you have to pay the insurance company to get it back? Shouldn't you get to decide what is done to it?

Thats why they offer the buyback. If Ins co totals it, they are essentially buying it from you. Then they sell it back to you to do what you want. They do that cause if you have 8000 dollars of repairs on a 10000 dollar truck, they dont want to commit to any additional unseeen repairs that they may be liable for later. So they total it, give you say 10000, you can buy it for 1800, they paid 8200 out. They make out better on the deal because a guy with a camera cant always say that it needs exactly X amount of dollars to fix. But 1800 sounds like a good price. I would buy it.

If his truck is worth $9000, then he wrecks it. The insurance co. give him $9000 towards his next car. (This is where your payments go.) Now that they have given him $9000, the truck is theirs. So now they are willing to sell it back to him for $1800. Simple.

Or he could not go through insurance, keep the truck as his. but he wouldn't get $9000 towards another ride.

Interior is grey. Doors and bed are fine. Color is a blueish Silver color. It has bench seats, auto hubs and the CV's are fine. It also has 3" cornfed and AAL w/ procomp shocks. Bummer is that I had just put AMSOIL front to back. As for turning it to a trail ride I would love to do it but need the cash to put down on another vehicle. SAS was my first thought but just can't do it.

So then just sell the cab and doors to me and part out the rest and you will get your money to put down on another vehicle.

All selfishness aside it sounds like it would be a good investment to by it back and sell as much as you can. From the interest I have seen here it shouldn't be to hard to sell and make your money back in no time. Let me know though if you do get it back. Where are you located?
