Hi,

I just bought a really clean 98 Tacoma 4x4, but the original owner was clueless as far as maintenance goes.

The truck has the original shocks, brakes, transmission fluid :( .....probably radiator antifreeze and so on. He changed oil every 6,000 miles.

I got it for $5,500 and it looks like new top side.....still has original paint too.

My main concern and question is about the timing chain. Will it last for 200 or 250K miles, or should I plan on changing it out?

as far as i know, the 4x4 tacomas have a 2.7 3rz-fe not a 2.4 2rz-fe (in 2wd 5 lug mini). and u are right about the older 2.4 22re's usually needing timing chain. my 95 tacoma 2.7 is still going strong at almost 170k and im not concerned about the chain at all, though i will probly check it out when i get a lil closer to 200k, as of now though all sounds really good and never done a valve adjustment or anything. never even had valve cover off. so at 150k i think u should be ok as long as its not making any strange noises. wouldnt hurt to change all the fluids and stuff ie. coolant, diffs, t-case, but personally i dont know if i would mess with the tranny fluid unless it is a 5 sp.

That is weird. I just bought this truck and the guy listed it as a 2.4L I didn't see anywhere on the engine where it said the size, and it did look quite different from my old 87 22RE. This newer truck said 16V, so I thought maybe they just updated the 2.4 motor. I will have to check further into this.

Yeah, I am changing out all the fluids and just doing a general service to it. The shocks are original and toasted too........ that will be the next thing.

Yea, ive heard many people make that mistake, sad to say, but even a salesman at a toyota dealer tried to say one was a 2.4 in a 4wd so i argued with him a lil and showed him the tag in motor... but either way, they are pretty much same engine and pretty good ones as well...

if it is a 4x4, it will be a 2.7(3RZ-FE), not a 2.4(2RZ-FE), those are in the 2wd tacomas
I have just over 154K miles and have yet to need a new Timing chain
Have you already opened up the timing chain cover and inspectd it for a loose chain?
If your vehicle has that many miles, really inspect all the fluids for any contaminants and maybe buy yourself one of those oil analysizer kits and send it in for a complete breakdown at a lab to see the engine oil and gear oil's properties

My 96 2.4l is 2wd and 16 valve. The most notable difference between the two engines is the 2.7l has a longer stroke than the 2.4.( I think 3.72 inches vs 2.72 inches) Most of the other specs (xcept power output) are the same.
